About this listen

The definitive account of Germany's malign transformation under Hitler's total rule and the implacable march to war. This magnificent second volume of Richard J. Evans's three-volume history of Nazi Germany was hailed by Benjamin Schwartz of The Atlantic Monthly as "the definitive English-language account... gripping and precise." It chronicles the incredible story of Germany's radical reshaping under Nazi rule. As those who were deemed unworthy to be counted among the German people were dealt with in increasingly brutal terms, Hitler's drive to prepare Germany for the war that he saw as its destiny reached its fateful hour in September 1939.

The Third Reich in Power is the fullest and most authoritative account yet written of how, in six years, Germany was brought to the edge of that terrible abyss.

Critic reviews

“[Evans’s] three-volume history... is shaping up to be a masterpiece. Fluidly narrated, tightly organized and comprehensive." (William Grimes, The New York Times)

Professor Evans gives both a sweeping and in depth picture of Nazi Germany in the years 1933 to 1939. This is an essential book for anyone who is trying to understand the roots of World War 2 and how Hitler established himself as a dictator.

Excellent and detailed history of Nazi Germany

What did you like most about The Third Reich in Power?

There is nothing not to like. It is great book showing point of view of regular Germans in different parts of society.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked the letters and diary entries added for the feel of an era.

What about Sean Pratt’s performance did you like?

He is the best narrator for this type of book. I wish he did some of the WWI and WWII documentaries on TV as narrator. Love his voice for history book. Didn't doze off even for a minute and I listen all day long!

Evans brings to life the full horror of the nazi regime, even against its own people before it began the war. A valuable book.

Great and terrifying book.

I’ve read a lot of books on the Third Reich but along with the other 2 volumes, if you’re not looking to read more, these will give you a thorough understanding of the ghastly regime. I regularly winced listening to the details especially the gross projection & hypocrisy of the leaders. To call others warmongers while planning the war for 20yrs, to call Jews thieves & parasites while invading other countries, stealing everything & keeping your own greed & financial incompetency going by living off the work & resources of the people you accuse. You know? Like a parasite. I’ve read a lot on the horror & it never ceases to sicken but there’s a special place in hell for the duplicity, projecting & hypocrisy. The diary entries & personal accounts bring personal depth to what could’ve been just another WW2 book. It’s not just an account of events but why they happened, why Germans didn’t stop it & how they thought at the height of the regime & at its defeat. We all think we’d never let it happen, that we’d fight back but how can you know until it happens? Let’s be observant for the signs, don’t let it start again & we’ll never have to find out….

Part 2 of a defining trilogy.

Prof Evans is a maven of Nazism with a solid analytical approach and review. Detailed, precise and depressingly prescient. The logical picking apart of the 3rd Reich in Power has echoes for the challenges faced by Democratic States concerned by the Behaviour of the US President. A vital read
