I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, with its full descriptions of 19th century theatrical entertainments, by Peter Ackroyd. The characters are well developed and well written, throwing in a few real people for good measure. The use of three narrators helps to convey the range of players that present the steps of the developing story.
I bought this novel not long after watching the film version, The Limehouse Golem, which takes a different view of the events, if I recall correctly. I shall now seek to watch it again. Ackroyd is a clever and very able writer, usually building his fiction upon a solid factual basis. I had previously read Hawksmoor, which I also enjoyed.

Although the narration is excellent the quality of the recording is quite not where it should be. Very often particularly during the chapters read by the female narrator there are monitoring problems, and the echoes are easy to hear. Definitely worth listening to though.
