About this listen

Now a major motion picture starring Viggo Mortenson and Kirsten Dunst

Two men meet in the picturesque backstreets of Athens. Chester MacFarlane is a conman with multiple false identities, near the end of his rope and on the run with his young wife Colette. Rydal Keener is a young drifter looking for adventure: he finds it in one evening as the law catches up to Chester and Colette, and their fates become fatally entwined.

Patricia Highsmith draws us deep into a cross-European game of cat and mouse in this masterpiece of suspense from the bestselling author of The Talented Mr Ripley.

Critic reviews

"An offbeat, provocative and absorbing suspense novel." (The New York Times)

"Shifts of ground stand metaphor for shifts in relationship; psychology is beautifully interleaved with a gritty genius loci" (Library Journal)

"Highsmith is a giant of the genre. The original, the best, the gloriously twisted Queen of Suspense." (Mark Billingham)

Would you try another book written by Patricia Highsmith or narrated by Christopher Ragland?

Yes

Would you ever listen to anything by Patricia Highsmith again?

Yes

What about Christopher Ragland’s performance did you like?

I think the narrator did a more than adequate narration of a confused and incoherent story

If this book were a film would you go see it?

As their is a film of the book, i would go and see it if only to see if the books short comings had been improved in any way.

Any additional comments?

I've read a few Patricia Highsmith books such as the popular,The Talented Mr Ripley, Strangers On A Train, Cry Of The Owl and Deep Water and enjoyed them all. Sadly, the same cant be said for The Two Faces Of January which starts off well, but by the middle of the book becomes so muddled and implausible that i couldn't wait for it to end.

Not One Of Her Best

Good read. Sags a little in the middle with some improbable plot lines. But still enjoyable. Narration is good and brings you along. Even if the female sounds like Dustin Hoffman in tootsie

Good but not as riveting as the Ripley books

Love all Highsmith’s work. They always pull you in, and just when u think nothing much is happening, everything is suddenly happening.
I really like the narrator, but so many strange pronunciations of words. Genevieve was my favourite. Just for the record, it’s pronounced Jennaveeve!
I’m often saying it, but surely there is a producer who is there to assist with this? And on several occasions he forgot what voice he was doing for the character. Again, where is the studio support on this?
But a great Highsmith tale - makes me want to listen to all the Ripley books again…

Great

What did you like most about The Two Faces of January?

This is my favourite Patricia Highsmith novel, and after listening on audio I downloaded the Kindle version and read that too!

What about Christopher Ragland’s performance did you like?

He captures the tension beautifully, and distinguishes well between two characters that are quite similar in some ways. He has the most listenable-to voice, which helps.

Any additional comments?

Brilliant story, one to listen to again and again.

The best audiobook I've listened to all year
