About this listen

Mischief, thou art afoot. Special Agent Ryan "Mac" McGuinness is having a rough week. Not only is he on a new diet, but he's also been tasked with keeping Henry Page -- the world's most irritating witness -- alive. Which is tough when Mac's a breath away from killing the Shakespeare-quoting, ethically-challenged, egg-obsessed Henry himself. Unless killing isn't really what Mac wants to do to him. Con man Henry Page prefers to keep his distance from the law . . . though he wouldn't mind getting a little closer to uptight, handsome Agent McGuinness. As the sole witness to a mob hit, Henry's a valuable asset to the FBI. But he's got his own agenda, and it doesn't involve testifying. When evidence surfaces of a mole in the FBI office, Mac and Henry are forced to go into hiding. Holed up in a fishing cabin, they're surprised to discover that their feelings run more than skin deep. But as the mob closes in, Henry has to make his escape. And Mac has to decide how far he's willing to go to keep Henry by his side.

******* The Playing the Fool series should be listened to in order for maximum enjoyment.

Romance with a bit of suspense with a G-man and a con-man who witnesses a murder and tries to run - but can't quite shake the determined FBI agent looking for him. The grumpy/sunshine vibe is nicely done - the banter is excellent, and Henry is a lot of fun; he's a chatterbox with a talent for getting under people's skin and for getting to know more about them in a few minutes than grumpy Mac has ever learned; he's bright and funny, but there's some darkness, too, which makes him into something more than a manic-pixie type and it's clear there's a lot more to him than meets the eye.

I enjoyed the story, but the pacing of the romance is off; the mutual attraction between the pair moves a bit quickly and, honestly, inappropriately, as Henry is still a witness and under Mac's protection when they start getting physical. (Although "starting" is as far as they get here!)

This was originally released in 2014, and re-released recently (I assume the authors got the rights back) - it's an early Nick J. Russo recording, but the only thing I can really find to criticise is that he speaks a bit faster than he does now, and sometimes - not many - I wish he'd let the words breathe a bit more. Still, it's an excellent performance - he does a great growly Mac and a sparky Henry, and the secondary characters are well realised, too.

The G-man and the con-man - a fun listen.
