I love D.E. Stevenson’s work as a pathway to an earlier world inhabited by my grandmothers and great aunts. The first Miss Buncle book was genuinely funny and her introduction to Wandlebury in the sequel kept up the pace. For me, and others might disagree, this one doesn’t quite do that. Some of the attitudes would not be acceptable today but that can be true of any book that is true to previous times.
But what really lets it down is the narration, and total lack of consistency. If a narrator is booked to read a sequel, when they have narrated both previous books in the series, you would assume they would listen to their own earlier work to refresh their memory for the character’s voices. Not here. For instance, in Miss Buncles book Dr Walker had a broad Scots accent. Here, in his brief appearance, he is totally English Home Counties. But Markie has suddenly done the reverse! OK she now has a back story from Fife, but why change her voice so much? Gerry, who had a pleasant voice in Miss Buncle Married, now is shrill and grating. But to be fair there is one consistency: all small boys are given the same rather unpleasant problem with adenoids…
Not the best D.E. Stevenson, and the narration didn’t help: but there are plenty other of hers on Audible to enjoy.
