Summary

Daniel Clay, a once-respected psychiatrist, has been missing for years following revelations about harm done to the children in his care. Believing him dead, his daughter Rebecca has tried to come to terms with her father's legacy, but her fragile peace is about to be shattered. Someone is asking questions about Daniel Clay, someone who does not believe that he is dead: the revenger Merrick, a father and a killer obsessed with discovering the truth about his own daughter's disappearance. Private detective Charlie Parker is hired to make Merrick go away, but Merrick will not be stopped. Soon Parker finds himself trapped between those who want the truth about Daniel Clay to be revealed, and those who want it to remain hidden at all costs. But there are other forces at work here. Someone is funding Merrick's hunt, a ghost from Parker's past. And Merrick's actions have drawn others from the shadows, half-glimpsed figures intent upon their own form of revenge, pale wraiths drifting through the ranks of the unquiet dead. The Hollow Men have come . . .

A stunning rendition by Jeff Harding of a darkly constructed mystery by John Connolly. Brings a new and emotive interpretation to a narrative master of the Crime genre.

Stunning rendition by Jeff Harding.

Another great installment in this series from John Connelly, and again, a great performance. Jeff Harding IS the voice of Charlie Parker.

Superb - just as expected.

Firstly performance: by now I’ve become used to the narrator as he’s narrated all previous books excluding one. Might just be me but I felt he gave Louis a more dumbed down feeling this time round and Angel sounding more like a NY pipsqueak. I think the characters are much deeper than perhaps they’re portrayed.

Another point I’ll mention is that I was very aware of hearing pages being turned/held and felt like these could’ve been edited out? Personally found them quite distracting (I listen through headphones so perhaps more obvious).

The story: it was ok, there were interesting characters throughout. I had wondered if I’d missed a book when The Collector was introduced but apparently I haven’t. I feel like it was quite slow throughout and as a result the ending felt a bit rushed the way everything suddenly seemed to happen.

I’m honestly a bit bored of the Rachel storyline and feel like maybe the author introduced a love interest/family too soon in what appears to be a long series and they sort of get in the way/don’t add anything for me.

Not my favourite

Connolly and Harding make the perfect thriller cocktail. Excellent story and characters, coupled with a great sense of place. I'll almost certainly follow this series through to the bitter end.

Gotta love the Bird!
