Summary

“I’ve arrived in London without incident. There are few triumphs in my recent life, but I count this as one. My existence of the last three years has been nothing but incident.”

The Year is 1883 and Emma M. Lion has returned to her London neighborhood of St. Crispian’s. But Emma’s plans for a charmed and studious life are sabotaged by her eccentric Cousin Archibald, her formidable Aunt Eugenia, and the slightly odd denizens of St. Crispian’s.

Emma M. Lion offers up her Unselected Journals, however self-incriminating they may be. Armed with wit and a sideways amusement, Emma documents the curious realities of her life at Lapis Lazuli House.

Audiences have compared Beth Brower's writing to Jane Austen, Oscar Wilde, P.G. Wodehouse, and L. M. Montgomery.

Narrated by Genevieve Gaunt. A Londoner born and bred, she started her acting career playing Pansy Parkinson in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban before going on to read English at Cambridge where she graduated with a Double First. Recent work includes playing Marilyn Monroe in The Marilyn Conspiracy on stage and narrating The Spy Who Loved Me by Ian Fleming. Alongside acting on stage, screen, audiobooks and radio Genevieve writes for audiodrama (Thunderbirds), reviews books for The Spectator and interviews authors and creatives for literary festivals and in print for A Rabbit’s Foot magazine.

Directed by Tamsin Collison, an award-winning audio director with over 500 audiobooks and dramas to her credit, collaborating with artists from David Tennant to Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Recent highlights include a dramatisation of Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park, Thandiwe Newton's award-winning recording of Tolstoy’s War & Peace, and a new set of all-star readings of Ian Fleming’s James Bond novels. She also lectures at leading UK drama academies, including RADA and LAMDA. A lyricist/librettist, Tamsin has been commissioned by English National Opera, the Royal Opera House, Tête à Tête Opera, Highbury Opera Theatre and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Recent works include Last Man Standing and an opera based on Michael Palin’s The Weekend.

The book sets the scene for the following volumes and I loved the character voices given by a talented voice over artist/actress. The attention to detail in the production can be heard in the quality of the recording and in the pace encouraged in the reading. I can't wait to read volume 2 to see what happens next. Recommend reading this to dive into a past world. Really feel the era through the story and love that the main character is witty.

The setting, the suspense, the treachery!

Absolutely brilliant narration, really encapsulates Emma's character. Other character's voices are done really well too (Aunt Eugenia!). I have read the eBooks previously so was already in love with this series and the audiobooks have added so much to a reread.

Beautifully read, really enhances a re-read

Short and sweet, literally. A very easy listen, with wit and charm, and a baddie we can love to hate. Not groundbreaking, but it's not designed to be. Perfect for days when you want some light escapism.

I've bought the next few in the series while they're on Audible sale, and I must admit I'm hoping for a little something extra as the series develops. Let's see!

Light escapism with a baddie you'll love to hate

Sort of ‘steam punk without the punk’ these books are engrossing and compelling, amusing and diverting. They have a number of inaccuracies and were clearly written by a modern American but definitely worth a listen.

Compelling and engrossing
