About this listen

Forced to leave the Clan and her young son, Ayla sets out alone to travel the frigid steppes until she finds the valley of horses. Unable to find people like herself, the Cro-Magnons, she settles there and seeks friendship elsewhere. First she adopts a young filly, then a wounded lion cub.

But far to the west, two young Cro-Magnon brothers have begun a journey. One of them is Jondalar, whose destiny is bound inextricably with Ayla's.

Jean Auel's imaginative reconstruction of pre-historic life, rich in detail of language, culture, myth and ritual, has become a set text in schools and colleges around the world.

Revisiting this series after a couple of decades - this one was my favourite and I'm keen to see what the final ones are like story wise. Performance is great and engaging (I'm funny about narrators). Having someone read it to me made the Sharamudoi bit less boring (sorry! Only care about Ayla!). Had to skip past the sex scenes after a bit because they are a bit much but luckily there are buttons for that. Hope I make it to the end of the series.

Good value and fun

Brilliantly read and incredibly written. More than just a glimpse into the distant past. An amazing story.

Engrossing and fascinating

Read these in paperback many years ago and thought it would be nice to listen to them. Very well read and a treat to listen to.

These will become classics. Everyone should read them. The imagining of how things might have developed during human evolution from Neanderthal man is incredibly powerful.

Excellent book, excellent series.
