Summary

Concealed by a shroud of dirty brown velvet was what looked like a heap of rags. In a desolate subterranean car park of a Shopping Centre, Dorothy Sanders pulled back the velvet curtain revealing the grim discovery of a woman’s body. Inspector Michael Burden, for a while conducting the investigation without the help of Wexford’s intuitive genius, blunders down a number of blind alleys before uncovering the truth. Who would garrote a middle-aged housewife and leave her body in the parking garage of a suburban shopping mall? Chief Inspector Wexford is no sooner on the case than a car bomb's explosion lands him in the hospital. It's now up to Mike Burden to step in and solve the case. He's got a suspect . . . but will he be able to make him talk?

A typical Ruth Rendall with meandering story lines, only finding out the conclusion in the last 5 mins.

Overly long

Was feeling a bit depressed about RR as I’d just read/heard one of her later novels, and was thinking how miserable and generally negative her later books were. Then read this, which I’d somehow missed - and it’s brilliant ! Her usual blend of complex crime story, a range of her mixed bag of (frequently unloveable) characters, Burden’s bigotry and consequential mistakes (and oh boy, does he drop a clanger in this one), and Wexford and Dora’s ghastly family. And her customary sly dose of humour - i actually laughed out loud at one point. Finally, I very much enjoyed the narration- although different to the George Baker readings, I thought he gave an excel in alternative interpretation.

Wexford

One of her best

Twists, turns and surprises. An in depth look into the psychy and the human touches and family lives that make you feel you know the detectives well. My only criticism is the pronunciation of the authors name, not for the first time is incorrect. I have heard it said by numerous people including on the television, pronounced somewhere between Rendle and Rendul, not Rendelle. It may seem pedantic but it's a pretty well known author and the narrator doesn't know how to say it! The reading of the actual story is very good indeed so I still gave him 5 stars.

Probably my favourite so far
