About this listen

The man who had died was Ismay's stepfather, Guy. Nine years on, she and her sister, Heather, still live in the same house in Clapham. But it has been divided into two self-contained flats. Their mother lives upstairs with her sister, Pamela. And the bathroom, where Guy drowned, has disappeared. Ismay works in public relations, and Heather in catering.

They get on well. They always have. They never discuss the changes to the house, still less what happened that August day. But even lives as private as these, where secrets hang in the air like dust, intertwine with other worlds and other people. And, with painful inevitability, the truth will emerge.

Strap in for the ride as the carefully-drawn characters perform their complicated interweaving dance and Rendell takes you exactly where she chooses. She's in the driver's seat as always. Wall or cliff, you just have to wait and see. Lovely reading too.

Another great book. Full of interesting characters and deviation. Amazing how Ruth Rendell had so many stories to tell.

I absolutely loved this book, the narrator is fabulous so easy to listen too. Definitely a curl up on the sofa with a cuppa and listen to book. My husband enjoyed it too, will be listening to another from the same author.

Easy to listen to

Some reviewers are complaining that most of the characters are mad or arseholes therefore it is difficult to like them or care about them. The alternative I guess is bland characters so I had no real issue with them

As you would expect there were plenty of strands woven into the cloth of this mystery and it did keep me guessing. I enjoyed it and listened to most of it in one day on a long drive. Ruth Rendell is certainly skilled at pacing and weaving a tale. The ending was a bit odd but there you go. The narrator was really good
