Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Chronic pain is a global epidemic.

28 million people in the UK alone struggle with back pain, headaches or some other pain that resists all treatment, often being told again and again that there is no cure.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

Frustrated by the lack of effective treatment for his own debilitating pain, psychotherapist Alan Gordon developed Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT), a mind-body protocol that eliminated his own chronic pain and has transformed the lives of thousands of his patients. In a ground-breaking study, PRT helped 98% of patients reduce their pain levels and 66% were completely cured.

Now, in his incredible and inspiring book, The Way Out, Gordon shows you how to:

  • Understand how the brain can unintentionally 'learn' chronic pain
  • Turn off pain signals that have become 'stuck'
  • Use revolutionary techniques to break the cycle of fear that causes chronic pain
  • Develop long-term strategies for living pain-free

Game-changing, practical and full of real-life stories from Gordon’s clinical practice, The Way Out will change the way you think about pain forever – and give you a way out of your own chronic pain.

‘With straightforward and practical wisdom, The Way Out presents a sophisticated yet simple approach to understanding and healing chronic pain.’ Dr Gabor Maté, bestselling author of The Myth of Normal

‘Quite possibly the most important pain book ever written. The Way Out will be the answer for millions who live in constant agony.’ Annie Grace, author of This Naked Mind

‘All chronic pain patients owe it to themselves to read this book’ Andrew Weil, MD, New York Times bestselling author of Spontaneous Healing

‘Every clinician who treats chronic pain should read The Way OutSteven Richeimer, MD, Chief of Pain Medicine, USC Keck School of Medicine

‘The Way Out is quite simply the most effective treatment for chronic pain’ Howard Schubiner, MD, clinical professor at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, and founder and director of the Mind-Body Medicine Program, Ascension Providence Hospital

Clearly articulated and easily understood. I’ve yet to put into practice but am hopeful it will make a difference to me.

As per the other reviews - excellent

2.5 years of alternating neck and shoulder pain.. during a time when I was most active in the gym, eating and sleeping better than ever and overall very athletic. Thanks to this book, I’m back to training at full level.

This book firstly brought insight on the fact that my pain came about during a particularly stressful period.

Seriously, you have very little to lose and all to gain. In 3 weeks I’ve gotten 100x further than 9 months of physiotherapy. I’m virtually pain free now

Read it with an open mind. I only learnt from my physio this year that chronic pain stems from the nervous system. And that there is no correlation between chronic pain and structural damage.

This book IS NOT saying it’s all in our heads, in fact the author says the exact opposite early on. If you do what many of us were tempted to do and switch it off upon (incorrectly) hearing that idea then you will be doing yourself a huge disservice.

The brain can trigger pain. And it gets very good at it.

Not only have I learnt an ASTRONOMICAL amount about chronic pain and my pain, but I know exactly what set it off (many things).. and why I’ve been here for 2.5 years. Quite a few days of the week I’d be in agony.. it was every single day and I couldn’t focus. 3 weeks now and have only been in pain a handful of time.

The book is extremely well-written, I’m certain it’s not just the concepts but the way things are described. How much empathy the author who’s medically qualified for this, and was a chronic pain sufferer themselves. He also has a good sense of humour, he backs many claims with real studies.. in fact he was among the lead researchers who set out to properly discover the underlying mechanisms in the brain of chronic pain, from MRI scans to countless hours with fellow patients just like ourselves.

No book has come close to changing my life like this one.

How your journey goes depends on MANY things, don’t expect a timeline like mine. It could be quicker, could be slower. And hey for all I know, I could wake up one day next week and be in agony.. but thus far I have 95% symptom improvements.

I feel forever indebted to this author and this has had such a positive impact that, I am looking into becoming a PRT (Pain Reprocessing Therapy) practitioner, a branch of treatment that he founded.. it’s incredible how powerful the mind is.

I have ADHD and I rarely lost interest during this book, contrary to listening to many others, so that should speak for engagement.

Changed my life. 2.5 years of pain

Excellent, clear, succinct. Opened my eyes to why things are happening in the body and mind. Applicable to anxiety as well I suspect.

A new insight into pain
