About this listen

Holy war. Magic rooted in empathy and transcendence. Fantasy creatures as never seen before. The Kingdom of the Eternal will awaken when the Way of Edan holds sway over all of Eormenlond. So say the prophecies. With unrivalled power in the gift, the Supreme Priest Bledla leads Torrlond and its mighty army to convert rival kingdoms by the sword and by the fang.

Among the gathering resistance is the sorceress Sequara, whose mission is to protect her island and her Andumaic faith from the Torrlonders’ aggression.

As holy war looms over the kingdoms of Eormenlond, a chance encounter bestows a terrible curse upon a young man. Dayraven’s curse may decide Eormenlond’s fate. But first, with the help of unlikely friends, he must survive the shattering of his world.

Equal parts epic and lament, The Way of Edan is the lyrical opening of The Edan Trilogy.

Critic reviews

"In The Way of Edan, Philip Chase has written a highly accomplished first novel. The storytelling is top-notch. There's a gravitas in the writing that put me in mind of Tolkien, with definite shades of Katherine Kerr, along with John Gwynne. This is a novel born of love for the story." - Mark Lawrence (author of The Broken Empire Trilogy)

"What a wonderful read! Prose that is smooth and accessible, a world with a weight and a depth to it, and a gripping and emotional story. There's a lot to love here. Lovely to see the Anglo-Saxon influences that gave me a real sense of time and place, and the storytelling was done with a deft, assured hand." - John Gwynne (author of The Faithful and the Fallen)

"The Way of Edan encompasses an expanding war driven by voracious religious fanaticism. Young heroes emerge, bonded by loyalty, in an age of ripening prophecy. Traditional fantasy readers will find elves with a fresh spin expanding the familiar bounds of individuality, and women, old and young, who wield magic in positions of power." - Janny Wurts (author of The Wars of Light and Shadow)

Fantastic start to the year and an outstanding audiobook experience.

I absolutely loved The Way of Edan. I listened alongside reading, and the audiobook truly stands out. The narrator delivers an exceptional performance with distinct voices, accents, and real emotional weight. It feels less like a reading and more like a full performance.

The story itself is beautifully written, with elegant prose that never feels overdone. While the opening introduces a lot of names and places, it quickly settles and becomes easy to follow. The religious themes and questions of faith are handled thoughtfully, and the action scenes are vivid and immersive.

A brilliant start to the series and one I cannot wait to continue. Highly recommended, especially in audio.

An Exceptional Story, Elevated by a Phenomenal Narration

This was a reread for me, which shows I love the story. The narrator had an excellent range of distinct voices which elevated the story even more. Now eagerly waiting for the audio for book 2, The Prophet of Edan.

Excellent narration

I really loved this book, by an accomplished fantasy scholar now publishing his own fiction. Old -school in a good way, I can't wait for the rest of the trilogy to be available in audio!

Great, old-school fantasy

I really enjoyed this one.

It hit that sweet spot between that older style fantasy but with MUCH more modern pacing.

There were a couple of moments when the world building was getting squished in a bit, but it actually felt more like a feature.

Having a character tell the tale of their people is very much within that old school vibe, so in those moment's, although it felt jarring at first, it quickly reminded me of the Dwarves telling Bilbo the history of the Lonely Mountain.

I'm excited to get to the next one, which is already downloaded and ready to go later or tomorrow.

Where it ended also made a lot of sense but still managed to surprise me. For a story that doesn't feel utterly bleak, I am still going to be heading into the next with some apprehension for Imharr and Dayraven.

I can see this going into my "reread this when in a slump" category!

A solid mix of modern pacing and old school fantasy vibes!

This was a re-read for me, having first read it in written form shortly after it came out. I'm glad to say I enjoyed the story a little more, knowing what was to come. But what really impressed me, was Allen's narration. Having started audiobooks with DCC by Jeff Hays, as well as The Devils by Steven Pacey, I got quite spoiled by these actors who can perform a wide range of voices. Turns out Allen can really hold his own amongst them! His performance was very consistent and his female voices distinct and not shrill. I'm looking forward to re-reading the rest of the series on audio too!

Excellent narration and more enjoyable on re-read
