Following the end of the First World War, Eneas McNulty joins the British-led Royal Irish Constabulary. Sebastian Barry manages to get to the essence of anything he writes about. This is the story of Eneas McNulty, a Sligo man who at 16 joined the British Merchant navy and sailed the world. He became an outsider in his own community and at the time when political and religious divides broke families and communities, we learn of how his choices affected his life and that of those close to him.

As a story, it rings very true, but Barry’s narrative is pure joy. He writes with eloquence. He’s poetic, but in a way that draws the listener in to the people and places.

Narration throughout is superb and I’ve enjoyed every minute of this audio title.

Having read the book I was not expecting the audio telling of this story to match up; it did, and there again was the same voice in my head that I had as I read.

Barry's prose is breathtaking in its lyrical beauty. His sense of place and character are gripping. This is a glorious tale of a man exiled from a country he loved. Barry must be the finest writer in Ireland today - and that is saying something.

A beautiful tale. Takes a listener into Irish lyricism like no other, accompanied by one of the most accomplished narrators I've found. A work of art.

I was equally if not more enthralled with 'Days Without End '. Utterly recommend Sebastian Barry.
