About this listen

A totally addictive psychological thriller with edge-of-your-seat suspense

What really happened to his ex-wife?

Stroking her baby bump in the new home she shares with boyfriend Jack, Kara jumps at a knock at the door. On the doorstep stands Jack’s former mother-in-law.

Your boyfriend killed my daughter,’ she says.

Jack always said his ex, Natalia, disappeared on a family holiday. It’s a heartbreaking story – and Kara knows she’ll never replace his first love.

But why is the woman in front of her telling a different story?

Jack swears that this woman is lying. Kara wants to believe him…

But what about all those times he went silent when his ex’s name was mentioned? Why does he always get angry when Kara asks questions about the night Natalia died?

What if it wasn’t grief after all, but guilt?

Fans of The Housemaid, The Perfect Marriage and The Girl on the Train will be absolutely hooked on this nail-biting psychological thriller. Prepare to be gripped!

Set in a mainly female cast this story have you guessing, gasping, wondering and feeling on edge.
At times you second guess everything.
So many twists and turns.
Firstly though, apologies that my review is late, my stop fell on my short notice moving date.
I listened to it on audible whilst packing up. I ess gripped.
I am sure of how to spell the characters names having listened to the book. At one point I thought one twist had Return to Eden vibes.
The teen in the story lost her mother on a cruise, her dad met someone new and the new is expecting a baby boy, having lost her family in a crash.
The young girls maternal grandma comes to stay and causes a stir.
Things start to happen. Police get involved.
Who is doing these things. Or is it more than one person? She’ll keep you guessing.
Fabulous.

Excellent story with so many twists it kept me guessing right to the end! Brilliantly narration by Tamsin Kennard too. Love Sheryl Brown's books and this didn't disappoint 😊

This book starts with a compelling premise that immediately pulled me in. The story follows Kara, a woman grappling with the devastating loss of her husband and son, who finds an unexpected connection with her builder, Jack. Bonded by shared grief, Jack, having recently lost his wife, Natalia, in a tragic holiday accident, and the two rush into a whirlwind relationship.

The tension initially builds well as Kara moves into her stunning, redeveloped home, only to face a fraught relationship with Jack’s daughter, Evie, and the lingering "ghosts" of the past. However, what began as an engrossing psychological thriller quickly lost its momentum.

Unfortunately, the book suffers significantly from bloated pacing and poor editing. With roughly thirty unnecessary chapters, the narrative feels repetitive, circling the same points until the initial excitement evaporates. While the plot is designed to be full of "twists and spirals," they are so overdone that they lose their impact. By the final act, I found myself disconnected from the characters; the mystery of "who killed who" no longer carried any emotional weight. I have rarely wanted a book to end as much as I did this one.

The saving grace of this experience was the audiobook narration. Tamsin Kennard’s performance was faultless, delivering a high-quality read that almost made up for the story's structural flaws.

Ultimately, a strong start and a great narrator couldn't save a plot that felt over-extended and exhausting.
