Summary

Milly Theale is a young, beautiful, and fabulously wealthy American. When she arrives in London and meets the equally beautiful but impoverished Kate Croy, they form an intimate friendship. But nothing is as it seems: materialism, romance, self-delusion, and ultimately fatal illness insidiously contaminate the glamorous social whirl.

I found this a real slog, only offset by Juliet Stevenson’s perfect narration. The Portrait of a Lady is a much better work.

This book is unbelievable in its complexity and its attention to detail. I rewind all the time, if you miss a word you can miss out on something key. I just love Juliet Stevenson’s voice and her pace. For me her reading Henry James is the perfect combination.

I always choose Juliet Stevenson if I can

Not for the faint-hearted. A great story with some superb writing but it is slow. The characters take long- windedness & never saying directly what they mean to the extreme which takes some patience from the listener/reader.

Slow & wordy

Once you get used to the style of writing this is a beautiful and poignant story well worth listening to

Audible Review.

This is excellent. Henry James’ magnificent examination of love, betrayal, enjoying and losing life is here superbly narrated by one of my favourite actresses – Juliet Stevenson. As often with an audio version you hear and notice so much more than from a preliminary reading. Dialogue, character, significant scenes and nuances all come alive in fresh ways in this fine audio book. Very highly recommended (Michael).
