Summary

"[A] huge and sprawling tale of horror." —The New York Times Book Review

Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches—a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women.

Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale that challenges everything we believe in.

I read a lot of reviews on this book but I'm glad I got it. I couldn't put my phone down fir 3 days. I do have to say though this was my first Anne Rice book and wasn't what I was expecting

Loved this book

The book started really well - fascinating, intriguing; told in a beautiful and sophisticated language.
Unfortunately, it slowly turned into heavens knows what - either history or murder mystery or paranormal sort of genre.
The ideas of incest, demonology and witchcraft are bold and interesting, however, I feel, the writer got lost in the way too complex structure of her novel.
I dropped the book in the middle of it, as it turned into a boring recounting of centuries of family generational chronology. A waste of time.
Brilliant narration, though.

This novel had me spellbound. The story of the Mayfair witches was so well written, the characters so well developed that it had me wishing I could return to New Orleans. The narration was impeccable!!!

Moving on to Lasher now and hoping it’s just as good!

Spellbinding story and incredible narration

In “The Witching Hour”, book one of The Mayfair Chronicles, Anne Rice gives a very detailed history of a number of characters.

It is amazing the detail she goes into. However, the downside of this is you get a very very long audiobook.

Whilst you do get a great deal of information on the characters, there is little “witchcraft” in the story. So the story seems to lack excitement.

What does save the day is the excellent narration by Kate Reading.

A Very Long History, But Little “Witchcraft”
