London, 1850: A young Charles Lenox struggles to make a name for himself as a detective...without a single case. Didn’t expect to like it as it seemed very heavily influenced by Sherlock Holmes and even a bit by the ripper murders as the characters had similar names to police officers and SH characters and I wasn’t really drawn in for a good section of it but by the end I enjoyed it and the fathers line at the end about gambling made me laugh and there’s some very touching scenes between father and son and I did find that by the end I was thinking I’d read another one in the series, it was an easy read too and anyone who enjoys Sherlock Holmes and historical mystery books would probably enjoy it, there are a lot of very likeable characters too!

I was dubious about this as it’s set in England written by an American, and I’ve found other authors have been lazy in doing research and have been frustrated by inaccuracies. Not an issue with this book, Charles Finch has written a book that contains no obvious inaccuracies in either language or culture.
The characters are believable and likeable, the story kept me interested and the narrator has done a good job in performing the text.
All in all, highly recommended and will definitely buy more by this author.

Intelligent, charming and beautifully written, "The Woman in the Water" is a historical mystery set in London in 1850. This is my first encounter with both Charles Finch and the Charles Lenox series, but I will certainly read more by this author. Most recommended!

I have just finished listening to this and bought the next one. This is my first Charles Finch novel and I thought the Americanisms were due to bad research, not knowing that he has been writing the series for twelve years. Using 'fall' instead of autumn, referring to distance in 'blocks' and talking of 'half a pound' in wages instead of ten shillings or even half a guinea ... It was very annoying for a while but as the author has lived in England and evidently done a lot of research the language he chose must be deliberate. I will continue to enjoy the stories, James Langton's excellent delivery, and spotting as many Americanisms as possible.

I chose this purely because of its star rating,superficial perhaps, but generally when it is lurking in the ‘plus category’ my expectations are not high! However I am very pleasantly surprised at this one,
By Charles FInch ( must look up!) but it was a delight, the reading, by Johnathan Langton was leisurely and easy, a touch of whimsy, ’scuse the pun - and Altogether relaxing, though of course murder was ever present, as it should be in such a gentle tale. A perfect Audible choice.
