About this listen

The Phelans have owned Mossgrove for generations. The small, rural Irish farm has been the pride of them all until Ned's wife, Martha, arrives and begins to undermine generations of hard work and happiness. She resents the deep history of the place and sets about making it her own, shutting out what is left of Ned's family. She is particularly jealous of Ned's sister, Kate, a local nurse and doting aunt to Martha's children. When Ned dies suddenly, Martha puts Mossgrove up for sale in hopes that it will be bought by the neighbouring Conways, who have long coveted the Phelan farm. What she does not realise are the lengths to which Kate and the hired hand Jack will go to keep the land in the family ...©1997 Alice Taylor (P)2019 Bolinda Publishing Contemporary Fiction Fiction Genre Fiction Literary Fiction Feel-Good

Enjoyed this story so typical of family and the struggle over land. It was well thought out and you were waiting on tenterhooks for the ending.

This was one of the Irish novels I have so far encountered. It is story of an Irish farming family and their neighbours describing the good and the bad in Irish society in post war rural Ireland. It might have been improved by a little more historical background. It didn't bother me too much as the story was so gripping. The narration was excellent, so perhaps compensated for the lack of date setting. If there had been pages to turn - I would have described it as a page turner.

A page turner!

Thoroughly enjoyed the introduction to this trilogy. The narration draws you in and is so well done that you feel you get to know the characters and there places within the family. Will look forward to listen in to the second book.
