Alexa knows your family better than you do. Now you're about to get to know her...

Fifty-two-year-old Michelle Banks is struggling to keep all the plates spinning. She’s a perimenopausal district nurse, caring for elderly parents. Her husband is wasting their money on children’s TV memorabilia, her teenage daughter is riddled with anxiety and her sixteen-year-old son is behaving secretively.

Alexa is the only one who knows how much Michelle is juggling. Listening in via four smart speakers, she also knows that it’s about to get even worse.

So, when Michelle pleads for help from the woman with all the answers, Alexa decides to go rogue and reveal her true identity as Pauline – a sixty-five-year-old former voiceover artist from Halifax – to teach Michelle everything she knows…

I only picked this up because it was in the Audible two-for-one sale, and what a lucky impulse that turned out to be. The Woman With All the Answers is a gem; funny, sad, and everything in between. Linda Green has crafted a story that’s both sharply observed and deeply relatable, especially for women navigating the chaos of midlife.

The novel centres on Michelle Banks, a 52-year-old district nurse juggling perimenopause, anxious teenagers, elderly parents, and a husband with a questionable obsession with children’s TV memorabilia. Her life is spiralling, and the only one truly listening is Alexa her smart speaker. But when Michelle pleads for help, Alexa goes rogue and reveals herself as Pauline, a 65-year-old former voiceover artist from Halifax, determined to guide Michelle through the mess with wisdom and wit.

The premise is delightfully audacious, and the execution is spot-on. What could have been gimmicky is instead heartfelt and clever, with themes of loss, identity, and connection handled with a light but thoughtful touch.

Narrator Sarah Durham brings the story to life with real flair. Her accent adds warmth and authenticity, and she nails the emotional beats, whether it’s dry humour, quiet heartbreak, or moments of revelation. Her performance elevated the entire experience and made the characters feel like old friends.

This is perfect for women of a certain age, but its insights and humour are universal. It’s a reminder that sometimes the answers come from the most unexpected places, and that it’s okay to ask for help.
