Bloomsbury presents The Year of What If by Phaedra Patrick, read by Claire Calverley.

Can the future be rewritten?

On the verge of her second marriage, Carla Carter knows she’s finally found the one. She and her fiancé, Tom, met through Logical Love, a dating agency she founded for the pragmatically minded, and she’s confident that, together, they will dispel an old family curse claiming Carter women are unlucky in love.

But Carla’s highly superstitious family insists she visit a fortune teller before her big day, and the tarot cards reveal that a different man holds the key to Carla’s happiness – someone she met while travelling during a gap year, twenty-one years ago. This startling information spurs Carla to trace and revisit the ex-boyfriends she met during that time before she walks down the aisle.

From Barcelona to Amsterdam, Turkey to Paris, will Carla find her perfect match? And can a face from her past help Carla rewrite her entire family history, forever?

Critic reviews

Readers looking for a touching story about love and self-discovery will find much to enjoy in this heartfelt and appealing story of following your heart
Anyone with a meddling family and too many exes will feel right at home in The Year of What If, an escapist romp that offers it all: a European vacation, an unsolved mystery, and a whole lot of love (Christina Lauren)
Everyone comes to a point in their life where the question arises: what if I hadn't... what if I had...? The French call this reflection "the nostalgia of the impossible," and Phaedra Patrick has written this journey into the past as the start of a future so lovingly, compassionately and enchantingly that, after reading it, one has the intense feeling of having made a new, close friend, Carla. I thank Phaedra for this new friendship, I wouldn't want to miss it! (Nina George, international bestselling author of The Little Paris Bookshop)
An absolute vacation of a book... I loved every moment (Suzy Krause, author of Sorry I Missed You)
[An] uplifting tale of a woman searching her past — and herself — in pursuit of her one true love (Lucy Gilmore, author of The Lonely Hearts Book Club)
A magical, whimsical journey in which one woman seeks to answer the question so many of us have asked ourselves... What if I’d done it all differently? (Gretchen Anthony, author of Tired Ladies Take a Stand)

The narrator was great! I've never heard a narrator speak so many different accents a d characters that well.

The story of psychics and superstitions I found refreshing and different although some of the superstitions got mixed up with truth.

This listen did not make me laugh and I thought it was a Chicklit romcom.
I did want to keep listening to the book as I was intrigued to know what was going to happen, so it had a good hook.

Listening to Carla Carter travel around Europe meeting people of her past because of a tarot card reading was a good story but I felt let down at the end, I thought it would have had a better ending or an epilogue. I just wanted more.

I bought this on a 2 for 1 credit but I would not have spent a whole credit on this book although saying that I still do recommend this listen 🌠
