About this listen

Paradise lost...

In the future there is no want, no war, no disease nor ill-timed death. The world is a paradise - and then, in a moment, it ends. The council that controls the Net falls out and goes to war. Everywhere people who have never known a moment of want or pain are left wondering how to survive.

But scattered across the face of the earth are communities which have returned to the natural life of soil and small farm. In the village of Raven’s Mill, Edmund Talbot, master smith and unassuming historian, finds that all the problems of the world are falling in his lap. Refugees are flooding in, bandits are roaming the woods, and his former lover and his only daughter struggle through the Fallen landscape. Enemies, new and old, gather like jackals around a wounded lion.

But what the jackals do not know is that while old he may be, this lion is far from death. And hidden in the past is a mystery that has waited until this time to be revealed. You cross Edmund Talbot at your peril, for a smith is not all he once was....

Great book. One of my favourite starts to a series. While I'm not a fan of multiple points of view normally, John Ringo creates a beautifully woven story. Great blend of high tech and low tech.

Tremendous

Clearly inspired by Stirling's Dies the Fire series. This is set in the far future.
It has magic dressed up as advanced science.
The authors Black Tide rising series is a solid five star. One of the best SHTF books around. This book has occasional high spots, but is simply too weird. Story takes too long to tell the story. Caracters not well drawn.
I read all the first one, and can't be bothered to read any more.

Disappointed

I didn't have any problems with the narration but I found most of the book to be slow and boring. The beginning was interesting and the end but majority of the book is about the young apprentices going through their education.

Good overall

narrator is quite good, some voices were hilarious to listen to (in a good way). but impersonating women was usually off and a bit... I don't know just bad. great idea & book. sometimes a bit too much detail, which made it slightly boring at times, but overall a very enjoyable listen

cool story

the awful pronunciation of words like hectare "hect-r-ee instead of hect-air" and brocade "bro-card instead of bro-k-aid" made this an awful listen. Ended up stopping it before my brain turned to mush. I'm sure the story is a good one, but I couldn't get to the end
