Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

This audiobook includes two pieces of bonus material including a podcast episode of John Robins on The Allender Calendar, as well as an exclusive conversation with Elis James and Dave Masterman.

John Robins is a critically acclaimed stand-up comedian, Taskmaster champion, and an award-winning broadcaster. He is also an alcoholic.

But what does that mean? What is an alcoholic?

In Thirst, John tells the story of his life through the lens of alcohol, the drinks that made him, and those that broke him. From his earliest drinking experiences – pretending to be drunk after a sip of champagne aged five, spraying aftershave into his mouth at the school play afterparty, and university nights spent downing red wine alone in his room – to his last drink in 2022 and the journey into sobriety that followed, John explores our relationship with alcohol through reflections on decades of his own drinking.

From hazy memory to sudden clarity he sheds light on subjects from mental health to friendship, from creativity to the lies we tell ourselves, and answers questions such as: are alcoholics born or made? How can we make sense of youthful missteps? And can Buddhism provide relief when dealing with haemorrhoids?

Filled with insights and epiphanies from the world of addiction and recovery, Thirst blends John’s trademark raw honesty and hilarious digressions with the collective wisdom of alcoholics and those around them to offer a compelling, powerful and morbidly funny narrative for anyone who has ever asked 'why do we drink?', 'why do I drink?' or 'do I drink too much?'.

Critic reviews

The most honest, helpful and perceptive book I've ever read about alcohol, and also the funniest (Josh Widdicombe)
The funniest book ever written about wanting to drink yourself to death (Lou Sanders)
Insightful and intelligent. Harrowing but hopeful. And, as always, hilarious (Adrian Chiles)
A triumph, and as powerful a description of alcoholism as I've read (Bryony Gordon)
I loved this book. Unflinching, poetic, funny and beautiful, yet still somehow so needlessly pedantic and silly. It’s a rich and generous enquiry into how to be a human (Josie Long)
Robins at his finest (Pierre Novellie)
Equal parts hilarity and heartbreak, delivered with rare candour (Lou Sanders)

Brilliantly written. John has a style that is eloquent, easy to listen to and keeps you hooked throughout.
Just the right balance of dark and light. Plenty of humour, but not so much as to take away from the gravity of the topic at hand. Self-deprecating, humble and insightful, but without self-pity, John clearly has a high level of self-awareness and emotional intelligence.
An important and inspiring book not only for those affected by alcohol, but for all of us who have ever felt anxious, low or hard done by.
A double triumph - getting sober and writing a fantastic book.
Oh, and his show ‘Howl’ was incredible too and I would recommend it to everyone.

Brilliantly written, insightful, self-aware and funny. Devoured it.

I came to this book as a listener to Elis James & John Robins' Radio 5 show and podcast. I it, two blokes and a producer talk about their week, introduce features and play games. When I first heard it, I warmed to Elis but was somewhat wary of John's apprent mood swings. Part Alan Partridge and part woke Jeremy Clarkson John could make obsessing about detail seem sane if you listened enough. As time went on, I warmed to John but was shocked when he went public with his alcoholism. This book looks at why and how. It is at times funny, scary, terrifying and induces deep sympathy. But this is far more than a companion book to a podcast. You don't have to know him to pick up on his very human story. It is thoughtful, perceptive and well read without descending into sub-Californian platitudes. If your life has been in any way cursed with alcohol this will be enlightening. But you don't have to rely on this to get something out of it. At its heart is a man's struggle not to feel frightened. I started listening while it work but had to break off. It deserved more of my attention. A long car trip to and from Norwich was a perfect platform for listening to it. Recommended.

An astonishing autobiography that calmly traces a descent into hell and out again in a handful of drinks
