About this listen

'This novel stands successfully on its own, its characters fleshed out and in full possession of their idiosyncrasies — all magnificently conveyed by narrator Steve Worsley...He captures perfectly the novel’s dark wit and the region’s pugnacity, bringing a sense of festivity to the police crew’s inventive, anatomically challenging insults and foul execrations.' – The Washington Post

'MacBride is a masterful storyteller with a terrific eye for detail and razor-sharp wit. This House of Burning Bones is an absolute must-read.' – Karin Slaughter, author of This Is Why We Lied

The Granite City is ready to burn, and all it takes is a single spark . . .

In the heat of a blistering summer, Aberdeen’s police are struggling: half the force is off sick, leave has been cancelled, someone’s firebombed a hotel full of migrants, and there’s a massive protest march happening this Saturday.

With officers dropping like flies, Detective Inspector Logan McRae is forced to juggle cases and run a major murder investigation with a skeleton staff of misfits, idiots and malingerers until the top brass can arrange back-up from other divisions.

It doesn’t help that the Aberdeen Examiner has just been bought by Natasha Agapova, a tabloid media tycoon hell-bent on blaming local police for everything. And she’s more than happy to fan the flames.

But, as bad as everything seems, it’s all about to get much, much worse . . .

I have been a fan of Stuart MacBride for a while now and have been waiting for the next Logan MacRae book.
Both the story and the narrator did not disappoint. All the usual characters, I think Tuffty is my favourite.

I have waited a wee while for this book

Thoroughly enjoyed the whole series and the narration definitely brought the characters to life, especially Steele! Loved the little nuggets of humour (mostly to do with Steele’s hair!) and the general way it was written. Will probably find myself speaking Tufty-ese now as I’ve spent so much time with the whole gang!

It can’t be over!

A fantastic performance by Steve Worsley who brings all Stuart McBride’s wonderful characters to life, capturing their highs and lows - the humour and pathos, the harshness and warmth and all the many contradictions. At first I thought perhaps this book had tipped over the edge into ‘comedy cuts’, but as it progressed it developed the usual depth and surprises, cynicism and wit that I so enjoy in McBrides writing. Thank you so much. Ps I’m really going to miss “Roberta” as she retires.

Excellent - so sorry it had to end

So, so, so happy to have this ensemble back. Stuart MacBride was amongst the first authors I bought on Audible and his writing of this series has been an absolute joy - laugh out loud, heartbreaking, dark and light and warm and here we are again with the same great characters, great cases, great humour and great writing. I loved this return - the numerous cases pushed everything along at breakneck speed with some standout action (drama and intensity and absurdity all wonderfully mixed) but still time to indulge in all the fantastic characterisation of our favourites. Same world weariness, same unique descriptions, same worthwhile highlighting of current issues, same family of oddbods somehow working together. Love Logan and his crew. Surely this cannot be the end - surely we could have more (a retired Roberta still creating lewd chaos somehow...?).....Pleeeeeease!

A Wonderful Return
