Summary

Meredith spent his entire life being angry with his mother for not documenting his ancestry. For leaving the home of his heritage and dragging him out across the country so that he lost touch with his family and his roots. He spent much of his life wondering if he had not just fallen from the sky one day. In a phone conversation with his elder sister Leah, she said, "Missouri? Why in the world would you want to go back to Missouri?" Without a thought, he answered. "I'm sixty-six years old and I want to go back because I want to be buried amongst my own kind." After he hung up the phone, he realized he had put words to his strong desire to return home. A need he had felt for many years to go back and discover the family, friends, and roots that had been torn from him by his mother's desire to escape the farm life. Following her dreams, which he considered very selfish, she virtually destroyed the family unit of a father, mother and eight children. The eldest daughter had married and stayed in Missouri. The rest would face trauma and torment that would scatter them and make strangers of blood relatives.
