Summary

Spring, 1940: with Britons facing what has become known as the Bore War - nothing much seems to have happened yet - Maisie Dobbs is asked to investigate the disappearance of a local lad, a young apprentice craftsman working on a 'hush-hush' government contract.

As Maisie's inquiry reveals a possible link to the London underworld, so the country is bracing for a possible enemy invasion amid news of the British expeditionary force stranded along the French coast. And another mother is worried about a missing son - but this time the boy in question is one beloved by Maisie.

I am totally hooked on the Maisie Dobbs series and this latest book is as good if not better than the previous ones. The story is gripping and the narration perfect. The only problem is that I found it really difficult to stop listening and stayed awake far into the night to follow the plot! Can't wait for the next one!

excellent! I couldn't put it down. I love all the history, the author gives history living flesh and characters that you can relate to and care about.

Compared to the other books, this one was hard work; taken me many days to finish. Narration excellent. So many threads from other books wind together here, but are not tied to any satisfaction. Maisie's relationship with Strachan goes nowhere.

The themes of black-market, racketeering, reserved occupations, ambulance drivers and banking activity during war time are important but they are not exciting or dangerous like moving inside Nazi Germany as in other books.

You could skip this book in the series and not miss much of substance.

Excellent narrator gives spot on performance of intriguing story set in WW2. Lots of accurate and interesting context from author's own family wartime experience.

Brilliant narrator brings the book to life.
