Summary

Desmond McLaughlin was just getting through his life and trying to survive. A 9-5 job and a hobby that cost more than it earned left him just enough money to afford a crappy apartment and time to dream of something better. He was expecting to spend most of his life like this.

He hadn’t expected to be greeted by a CIA agent waiting inside his house one evening. He wasn’t expecting that CIA agent to tell him that he was being drafted for a special mission. And he really wasn’t expecting to basically get kidnapped.

But most of all, he wasn’t expecting to be told two important things. One, aliens were out there. And two, they wanted to take him as the first of the locals drafted from his planet to go to one of the few super-dreadnought class starships in the Hegemony and learn magic.

Join Desmond as he learns to manipulate mana—a source of power that exists beyond the reach of most people in the universe—meets vastly different alien species, risks life and limb, all while trying to pass classes. couldn't put it down after the first chapter characters are interesting engaging and story just keeps getting better

loving the sci-fi fantasy aspects and the magic system is well fleshed out. The universe is a melting pot of cultures and governments that you can easily see tensions rising later on. With plenty of mystery surrounding the Rifts, its environs and thr creatures they spawn. Characters are the true strength of this book only let down by the often at times bland narration. Though it does get easier to listen as you go. In all a great start to a series with promise.

a good sci fi tale with a VERY slow burn romance. a great bit of world building but no real peril or main threat as yet. also it teases a LOT! The narrators do an amazing job and bring everyone to life.

I look forward to the next one and hope to see more of the harem and also some challenges for the team.

It was nice to see an MC who while not taking crap also wasn't a complete idiot who constantly figured he knows best. Action was well written and the magic system was blended with the sci-fi elements brilliantly.

I want sure about this, and the start on Earth was… rough. If the government comes knocking, they actually knock, not act like some shady criminal empire because they have the authority.
But once the transition to space starts, then the fun really begins. And can I just say, I’m so happy for a lack of a “tournament”. It’s a place of teaching, and exams are the competition for rankings. Instead, we get training, live action as well as down time to progress relationships. Only one smutty scene which has its own chapter, though flirting is rampant through the book.
It’s a solid story, where the protagonist isn’t dumb, but isn’t overpowered either, the only thing unique is a magical healing factor which is highlighted as a boon and a flaw.
Great story, and I’ll be checking out more from this author.
There were a couple of audio issues, with sentences swapped, missing or duplicated. I’ve reported these to the author and expect they will be fixed shortly. There is also a trailer at the start of the book I just want to start reading… please, that just make me more annoyed because of spoilers - remove trailers Royal Guard
