The CIA betrayed him. Now they need his help…

Thomas Caine was the CIA’s deadliest killer. Then he was burned, betrayed, and left for dead.

Now he survives off the grid, currently in Pattaya, Thailand. But when a feud with local criminals lands him in jail, his old CIA masters return with an offer he can’t refuse… Rot in a Thai prison, or accept one last mission in Tokyo, Japan.

Forced to hunt the neon-lit city for a CIA asset’s runaway daughter, Caine soon crosses paths with a sinister faction of the yakuza crime syndicate and finds himself drawn into a terror plot that could throw the US and Japan into chaos.

But Caine knows a double cross when he sees one. He’s convinced someone in the CIA is manipulating him from behind the scenes. Someone who knows his past in intimate detail.

But this time, he’s not going down without a fight...

I really wanted to like this. I read all the reviews and it seemed like a good action packed and well written thriller. I was fairly disappointed when it’s more like a more hyperbolic version of Dan Brown. With this I mean, fairly predictable plots, stilted conversation between the characters that are almost one dimensional in their portrayal. Having grown to love Jeff Harding after listening to all of John Connolly’s books, this was a weird mixture. A fairly juvenile story with predictable and horrible portrayed protagonist but a beautiful reading by Jeff. If you like John Connolly or James Lee Burke, think of them as a good meal at a high class restaurant. This is more like pigging out on a double big Mac menu with a milkshake on the side. Halfway through the meal, you feel sick and a little bit shameful. I barely finished it and only did so because I’m too stubborn to quit. So yeah, I won’t be getting any more of the series.

Jeff Harding is always a strong performance. That said, the book not so much!
