‘Even in the darkest of Dickens novels, no family comes across quite as mendacious, grasping and avaricious as the Trumps’ Financial Times

A REVELATORY PORTRAIT OF DONALD J. TRUMP AND THE TOXIC FAMILY THAT MADE HIM – WRITTEN BY HIS NIECE, MARY L. TRUMP

Mary Trump spent much of her childhood in her grandparents’ large, imposing house in New York with Donald and his four siblings. She describes a nightmare of traumas, destructive relationships and a tragic combination of neglect and abuse. As a first-hand witness and a trained clinical psychologist, Mary explains how specific events and general family patterns created the damaged man who occupied the Oval Office.

Written by the only Trump willing to speak out, Too Much and Never Enough is a fascinating and unnerving analysis on one of the world’s most powerful and dysfunctional families. Mary Trump’s insight and intimate familiarity means she alone can tell the truth on what makes Donald, and the rest of her clan, tick.

Critic reviews

‘Mary draws a portrait of a surreal, scarred clan... But the fact that Donald morphed from huckster to celebrity to president makes her account seminal and indispensable. Mary’s clarity, training, discipline and sharp eye help make her a reliable narrator, and she’s a fluid, witty writer to boot. Everything in her book that I’m familiar with is spot on. There is plenty in the book, however, that I wasn’t aware of, and I suspect that’s the reason the president and his siblings have gone to court to try to halt its publication.’ (Timothy L. O'Brien)
'Trump claims to be unique, exceptional, a shining self-creation. This book by his estranged niece demolishes that myth. Mary Trump’s ruthless memoir blames their family for creating him: she sees it as her patriotic mission to “take Donald down”, and she does so by showing how derivative and dependent the ultimate self-made man has always been... In a startling final condemnation, she charges that his “craven need for ‘revenge’” on opponents makes him, in his nonchalance about coronavirus in New York, responsible for what she calls “mass murder”.' (Peter Conrad)
'Mary Trump’s compelling saga of one very unhappy family does more than just provide probing insights into her uncle’s disturbing inner world. It’s also a first-rate primer on the chaotic inner workings of an administration that has shocked the world by failing to take the basic steps required to keep Americans safe during the coronavirus pandemic.'
'The most devastating, most valuable and all-around best Trump book since he started running for president. In the vast Trump literature, this one is something new...[W]hat this book does do is help us understand him, offering the most incisive rendering yet of why he is the way he is.'
'A delicious tell-all that does in fact tell all in a way one longs for a tell-all to do.'
'Dripping with snideness, vibrating with rage, and gleaming with clarity - a deeply satisfying read.'
'Mesmerising beach reading and a memorable opposition research dump... It is salacious, venomous and well-sourced... Yet the narrative remains compelling.'
'[A] deftly written account of cross-generational trauma...Mary Trump brings to this account the insider perspective of a family member, the observational and analytical abilities of a clinical psychologist and the writing talent of a former graduate student in comparative literature.'
'After many, many Trump books, this is an essential one.'
'You can see why President Trump doesn’t want anyone to read this thing. It gives the lie to many of his most cherished myths about himself.'
'Mary L. Trump comes closer than anyone to describing the making of a seemingly heartless person who won his way to the White House...[A]n insightful, well-crafted memoir.'

Delighted that Audible released this recording on the same release date as the book.
Great that narration is by the author.
Don’t be disappointed in the information, this is a reflection of her father’s life and death as she experienced it as a child and young woman and how the Trump family dynamic and dysfunction impacted on all family members.
Couldn’t stop listening, well written and narrated. USA needs to elect a new president in November 2020!

Worth a listen for greater insight into the monster!

For anyone interested in the psyche of the current US President. The author being both his niece and a clinical psychologist gives a fascinating insight into why Trump is the way he is, where the hyperbole, arrogance and dishonesty comes from. The sort of book you can listen to in one day, if you’re not busy.

Well worth a listen

This is a very eye opening story. There are people who should have to be tested and licensed to have children. Fred Trump shoukd never have been allowed to parent anyone.

Fantastic read and terrifying.

I read this straight through. At times I felt heartache especially when hearing about Freddie Trump and his dreams and his passing. I have so much more respect for that man than any other Trump. Mary takes you through the family dynamics, showing the lack of emotional warmth to the vindictiveness of many of the Trump family members. The sickening greed and vulgarity of how money was worth more than blood. What you see in this "President" is what he has always been about and how Fred Trump, his father raised him just like Frankenstein. He put everything that was bad into him and his mother ignored it as she felt it wasn't her role to interfere or actually parent. Donald Trump went to the movies as his brother was dying due to take his final breaths. His German ancestors Friedrich Trump and Elizabeth both died of 1918 pandemic. Yet we see how he handles covid19. He is incapable of empathy. No one would have seen this in the last 4 years anyway but the book shows this clearly. The family are rotten with tax evasion and fraud over decades. You see the same parallels between his own children, the cycle is repeating. Yet they reminded Mary and her brother that their father, The Trump's sibling was dead and worthless and because of that, they too would be written out of the will. Sickening and cruel to just stop medical coverage they were entitled to when they knew that one of their children could cardiac arrest numerous times. Yet now he wants to get rid of ACA and take away coverage for those with previous medical conditions. He has done it with his own flesh and blood and he is doing it to the American people. November 3rd isn't just an election...it's America or Trump.
