Summary

This book is one of the best examples of a book which builds so gradually that you don't even realise you're being taken full tilt towards the ending.
I have found Raine difficult to read about in the first book and that didn't change in this. It reminds me of being inside Fitz's perspective (Robin Hobb trilogies). They make decisions which drive you up the wall but you're still rooting for them to grow up, to make the emotionally mature decision. Sadly, we have a way to go before Raine reaches emotional maturity (I'm still hoping for this in the final book) but I do still enjoy reading about her story.
The world building is incredible, which is pretty typical of the author, and I felt swept into Redwinter whenever I read it, which is my main requirement for rating a book 5 stars.

Not quite as good as the previous one as a bit too focussed on the main characters stupid romance drama, but an excellent world and magic system still keeps it interesting. I do think it's a shame that the savy and clever main heroine from the first book becomes basically an idiot though.

Excellent emotive voice to capture deep characters and complex emotions. Story drags at times but really hits it stride midway and keeps going, the escalation of young love and learning to dark, toxic themes of war, politics and power is fascinating.

The middle book in a series tends to move more slowly than the rest, but I said to myself that if I have to read one more sentence about the main character shooting herself in the foot over her relationship drama I'll drop it. The next thing that follows is her standing up the date that she's looking forward to because... reasons. I miss the cold, calculating, emotionless character from the first book, because this one can't make any progress except backwards.

Overall a frustrating read that had me skipping large sections just to get to the story I actually care about. The book would be half the length if it wasn't repeating the same angsty relationship mistakes over and over.
