About this listen

A bold reimagining of Maslow's famous hierarchy of needs--and new insights for realizing your full potential and living your most creative, fulfilled, and connected life.

When psychologist Scott Barry Kaufman first discovered Maslow's unfinished theory of transcendence, sprinkled throughout a cache of unpublished journals, lectures, and essays, he felt a deep resonance with his own work and life. In this groundbreaking book, Kaufman picks up where Maslow left off, unraveling the mysteries of his unfinished theory, and integrating these ideas with the latest research on attachment, connection, creativity, love, purpose and other building blocks of a life well lived.

Kaufman's new hierarchy of needs provides a roadmap for finding purpose and fulfillment--not by striving for money, success, or "happiness," but by becoming the best version of ourselves, or what Maslow called self-actualization. While self-actualization is often thought of as a purely individual pursuit, Maslow believed that the full realization of potential requires a merging between self and the world. We don't have to choose either self-development or self-sacrifice, but at the highest level of human potential we show a deep integration of both. Transcend reveals this level of human potential that connects us not only to our highest creative potential, but also to one another.

With never-before-published insights and new research findings, along with exercises and opportunities to gain insight into your own unique personality, this empowering book is a manual for self-analysis and nurturing a deeper connection not only with our highest potential but also with the rest of humanity.

Absolutely love the way this book is structured, the insights and the unfolding story of a writer discovering the untold life of his hero. Lots of evidence-based information that takes Maslow's original work and updates it to what he was really trying to develop over his career. No pyramids here but a sailboat that balances security and growth into a whole world experience. Excellent!

Love this book. Really thought-provoking

I came across this SBK after hearing him talk on the Sam Harris podcast and really enjoying his take and world-view. As a humanist celebrant and also someone deeply interested in psychology, it is strange that I have never explored humanistic psychology more.

I found this book the perfect starting point on that journey, referencing lots of long-standing humanistic principals - primarily around the work of Abraham Maslow - but also grounding them in the latest science and research. SBK’s reimagining of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs into a sailboat is a beautiful image and metaphor that holds strong in the head.

I love that SBK reads this himself. I sense from the delivery that he may have found that a changing task, but it gives the book such an important sense of authenticity.

I would say that it is a challenging, but rewarding, listen. A little textbooky at times, relatively long, but with SO much good stuff to take in. I frequently had to pause and reflect before continuing, which is a great thing.

It’s not a ‘how-to’ book per se, and I feel an accompanying course would add a lot of value to the principals covered. I know SBK is launching one soon.

A beautiful, beautiful book that I will also now buy in print so that I review and reread the principals, learnings and quotes again and again. Love it and SBK :)

A beautiful rewarding listen, packed with insight.

This has fantastically missed the mark for me, I was excited to hear he has continued on from A.H.Maslow but in his own way. There is a danger that you can walk away misrepresenting yourself and get bogged down thinking your a "Grandiose Narcissist", when you are not. The Author has taken a side in the potential future of mankind and has blindly adopted the vision of the group. I will look forward to the same author in the future to see if the self realizations differ from this current view. Otherwise great work in initializing what is to be a wonderful adventure for him, if he can step away from the esteemed to embrace it.

Fantastic book for being a book.

This book is a transcendence in itself.

As I’m climbing the second mountain of my life, the self help genre is changing to its original meaning - “help others”.

This book was designed to help others but only could through the lived experiences of the Author who was clearly on a self help, self actualisation journey.

This book is a calling to a belonging that you realise as the final chapter closes.

With the finite life we live, this book leaves you with a sense of infinite through your purpose, meaning, calling to guide future generations to fill their blank page.

Wonderfully crafted, researched and written book.

Thank you Scott 💜
