Summary
The rugged Florida troubleshooter Thorn is back in another high-tension story of crime, love, and revenge, described by the Chicago Tribune as "wry, vivid, wonderful. . . . A first-rate thriller!"
In an exotic blue-water locale where greed and criminality thrive, the mysterious disappearance of Thorn's boyhood friend Gaeton Richards, an FBI agent, entangles Thorn in a web of violence and intrigue that takes him from seamy local bars to glittering ocean villas. Then, when Gaeton's beautiful sister becomes Thorn's lover, he finds himself facing a jealous lunatic stalking her, a rogue government agent involved in a murderous scam, and an unforgettable underworld of petty crooks, amoral hired guns, and dangerous losers.

The narration is, once again, superb.
Here the minimalist Thorn is drawn out of isolated life when Gaeton Richards, his childhood friend and now FBI agent, tries to tempt him with a job offer.
Before you know it, Thorn again collides with another cast of colourful characters, criminals, and perfectly realised deluded losers in this latest page turner.
One of James W. Hall’s strengths is his potent sense of place. The humidity of the Florida Keys is well realised and he captures the fragile beauty of an environment which is continually being polluted and over developed by rapacious opportunists.
This is less coherent that its predecessor Under Cover of Daylight however as the next instalment in Thorn’s compelling story it’s another winner. I’ll be onto number three before too long.
