About this listen

Back on the job after an involuntary leave of absence, LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch is ready for a challenge - but a murderous Las Vegas crime ring might prove to be more than he bargained for.

It starts with the body of a Hollywood producer in the trunk of a Rolls-Royce, shot twice in the head at close range - what looks like "trunk music", a Mafia hit. But the LAPD's organized crime unit is curiously uninterested, and when Harry follows a trail of gambling debts to Las Vegas, the case suddenly becomes more complex - and much more personal.

A rekindled romance with an old girlfriend opens new perspectives on the murder, and he begins to glimpse a shocking triangle of corruption and collusion. Yanked off the case, Harry himself is soon the one being investigated. But only a bullet can stop Harry when he's searching for the truth.

Critic reviews

"Dick Hill is well versed in Bosch's style after two audiobooks in the series. Hill delivers the squad room banter and the interviews with suspects and witnesses with perfection....Bosch is immensely likeable, and Hill defines his character memorably." (AudioFile)

I do find Harry Bosch irritating at times... his irascible nature can become wearying - but at least he is consistent. Having now completed the first five books in the series I have come to really enjoy the stories. The first was narrated by Titus Welliver - who did a great job - the next four, including this, Dick Hill - also really excellent. One thing I really enjoy is the unpredictability of what happens next. Maybe it's just me (not good at guessing) but the stories do switch back in terms of who did what. I am also a little surprised at the involvement of law enforcement themselves in quite so many dodgy goings on.

If you enjoy what are effectively whodunnits - with great characters and lots of depth - not to mention a big catalogue of tales to catch up on - Mr. Bosch is your man.

Next up Angels Flight - though I am a little concerned that we have a change in narrator...

Excellent...

Dick Hill the narrator was brilliant I wish he carried on with the other books. The twists and turns in the story kept me gripped all the way through.

If you’re a Bosch fan you’ll love this.
A few twists and turns keeps up the interest.

Great story, well told.

Loving this series. This book carried the main theme that later appeared in Season 2 of the televised series. Obviously there are differences because of how the TV adaptation deviated. Both are great in their own right. Now onto number 5 in the books.

Another Great Book
