Summary

From the bestselling author of Sabre Security and Briar Valley comes a dark, found family why choose romance featuring a self-destructive heroine and the tortured men determined to save her from herself.

WELCOME TO BLACKWOOD INSTITUTE.

WHERE BAD GIRLS COME TO DIE.

Murderer. Unhinged. Remorseless. Insane.

I’ve been called it all while rotting away in a maximum security psych ward, imprisoned for my crimes. When I’m given a chance to escape this hell, it’s an offer I can’t refuse.

I’m transferred to Blackwood Institute, purgatory for the dangerous and disturbed. The deal is simple. Complete the three-year experimental program and you’re free to leave.

I have no such intentions. People like me; we’re born to die. There’s no life for me out there. I’ll do whatever it takes to end my pitiful existence.

This time, nobody can stop me. Not even the four fellow patients with dark secrets and damage that rivals my own.

A tight lipped cutter.

A manic nymphomaniac.

A possessive control freak.

A shadowy ghost from my past.

The clock is ticking. If I’m not careful, the demons that frequent these blood-stained halls will get to me before I can take my own life.

Game on.

Author's Note: Twisted Heathens is a dark, contemporary reverse harem romance set in an experimental mental health institution. This is book one in the trilogy and it does end on a cliffhanger. Set in the J Rose shared universe.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶🌶2.5

Twisted Heathens is not your typical romance. It dives deep into mental illness, trauma, and survival, following Brooklyn, a broken yet fierce woman who's admitted to a mental institution with one goal: end her life before the past catches up to her.

What she doesn’t expect? The four guys she meets inside...each of them just as damaged, dangerous, and complex. Their connection is messy, raw, and impossible to ignore.

Every character is layered and real...especially Eli (protect him at all costs 🥺) . The mental health rep is heavy and honest, so definitely check the trigger warnings first.

If you're into dark reverse harem with emotional depth, mystery, and morally gray characters that’ll wreck you..in the best way...this one's for you.

Twisted Heathens is not a light read...it’s brutal, beautiful, and at times deeply uncomfortable. But for those who crave stories about broken people finding pieces of solace in one another, it’s utterly captivating. Just be warned, the content is heavy. That said, if you’re ready to walk through the fire, Brooklyn and her twisted heathens will be waiting for you in the flames.

🎧For the Narration. This is a dual Narration, and i think both of the narrators did an excellent job. I'm very picky when it comes to British accents ( it's hard to enjoy what your brought up around in my opinion) but I think it was done well and each character had their own very easily identified personality.

Dark, intense, and completely addictive.

Finally, I can say: Welcome to Blackwood Institute. Where bad girls come to die.

I’ve been meaning to read this book for a while, and I’m so glad I finally started it with the audiobook. The narration was fantastic—Bridget Bordeaux’s voice is phenomenal. Her modulation really brought Brooklyn’s character to life, making her one of the best from J Rose’s repertoire. Grant Armstrong also did a great job voicing the four main male characters—Hudson, Kade, Eli, and Phoenix.

The story is addictive; once you start, you just want to finish. It’s so good that it almost finishes itself. J Rose is my favourite author when it comes to mental health representation, and she handles it so well in all her stories. Brooklyn, a broken FMC, has struggled with her past demons. When she’s transferred to Blackwood, she plans to die. But despite her initial intentions, she reluctantly befriends a group of outcasts who help her adjust and eventually worm their way into her heart. Kade, Phoenix, Eli, and Hudson each have their own challenges, but they form a makeshift family, determined to save Brooklyn from herself.

The dynamic between these characters, their mental health struggles, and their feelings for each other create a dark, intriguing tale. The first book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, and I’m already eager to read the next one. There are mysteries in Blackwood that remain unsolved, and some malicious characters lurking around. I’ve fallen in love with all these flawed characters and can’t wait to see what happens next.

My favourite from J Rose

"Nothing about this place is real, Brooklyn.
Don't you see that yet? It's all just..." He pauses, grinning and searching for the right word. "An illusion."

This is the first book in the Blackwood Institute series, this is a dark, reverse harem romance that will have you questioning everything you’re reading.
It’s intense spicy the twists and plot are insane in a good way 😏

The pain from all the characters was palpable, my heart broke for Brooklyn, also I love Eli I just wanted to to hug and protect him..

I review based on engagement and this hooked me straight away but it is a rough ride. Brooklyn's story is a tough read as although she is a fiery character, it's bleak as she slowly unravels. There are no real breaks for levity and most of the moments of connection between Brooklyn and the guys have violent undertones. Everything is 100% consensual but there was still a couple of really grim moments which felt a little uncomfortable in the context of the character's mental state. The writing is so good though; the mental health aspects aren't played for shock value and all of them are dealing with some pretty heavy trauma.

Bridget Bordeaux does a great job showing the rage that bubbles under Brooklyn's surface and how it contrasts with her sense of guilt and hopelessness. Bordeaux definitely captures screechy Britt to a tee! Grant Armstrong gets a lot to play with Nix, Hudson and Eli as well as the uptight Kade who will stop at nothing to protect his family. Things take a real turn at the end as something is going on at Blackwood and it's not good. There are some breadcrumbs dropped in those final chapters and I'm invested in what happens next when the pieces start coming together.

My interpretation of the star system;
3 stars - I enjoyed it; would read the author again
4 stars - I really liked it; I am invested and definitely want more from this author/series
5 stars - I loved it; I engaged with this book completely until I finished it and it is one I will re-read

Check tw’s! That being said I enjoyed this! It was a solid read and that cliffhanger at the end ?!😭✋🏻 Elijah was definitely my favourite out of the group, and Brooklyn was one tough cookie. I admired her choice in found family even if they were a group of misfits - but that just added to their charm. Definitely recommend

Dark but delicious 🔥🖤
