Finn

Ulysses MacDonald left my bed after earth-shattering sex, but he certainly hasn’t left my mind. When he turns up as the Mission City Gazette's new editor, I'm intrigued. Then he starts poking around my fire hall, sneaking and spying. He won't tell me what he's doing there, and he keeps dodging my attempts to get close. I don't trust him, but Ulysses is hot as hell, and I hate realizing I still want him.

Ulysses

Sleeping with Finnegan O’Sullivan should’ve felt like a mistake—but it doesn’t. I’m still attracted to the firefighter’s quick wit and willingness to put his body on the line to save total strangers. But an anonymous tip has led me to illegal activities in Fire Hall One, and I'm a reporter before anything else. I'm not going to back off or get distracted, just because Finn is around. My first job now is to figure out if Finn is involved in the crimes, or just an oblivious bystander. If I'm wrong, I might ruin a good man’s reputation. Oh, and I might also get us both killed.

Ulysses’s Ultimatum is an interracial, age-gap, grumpy/sunshine, small-town, gay romantic suspense novel with a valiant firefighter, an investigative reporter with a dubious past, and the secret that might destroy them both.

We met Finn, a hot firefighter, living in Mission City and volunteering wherever he can, and
Ulysses, the local paper reporter, in a Mission City Short, book 6.5, I would recommend that you read that first, but it's not essential.

Ulysses departs in the middle of the night, without a goodbye or a thank-you.
That was where the short novella left us hanging for more, and now we have it. Boy, what a great story it is, unfolding slowly, lots of plot twists and with plenty of hookups in between.

Both men have good character backgrounds, and I love how the story brings in all the characters we've met from the previous Mission City books; however, you can read this as a standalone.

Michael Dean did an excellent job of narrating this book. As usual, I sped up the recording to 1.20 on Audible.

We first meet firefighter Finn and journalist Ulysses in the prequel Finn's Find, where they have a one night stand. This books picks up nearly 4 months after that night where Ulysses left Finn after he fell asleep without a word. Now the two are back in each other's orbit and the heat between them has not gone out🔥🔥

There is a distinct push and pull between the two main characters throughout the story. They clearly like each other but there is tension due to the fact that Ulysses is keeping secrets because of his job as a journalist investigating Finn's place of work and people he knows in Mission city. This of course frustrates Finn but Ulysses has a job to do - and he discovers more than he thought!

The book can be listened to as a standalone but I would recommend you listen to Finn's Find beforehand. To get the full experience, listen to the other books in the series.

As always Gabbi Grey delivers a great story and narrator Michael Dean brings it to life. I love this world that has been built. We have people from the previous stories pop up naturally and a HEA. What more can you want🥰

Excellent narration throughout.
Story - Finn and Ulysses had met previously and had a very enjoyable night, after which Ulysses disappeared, leaving Finn feeling ghosted. The mystery which Ulysses was investigating as a reporter was appropriately complicated, and made it even more believable that it took the MCs so long to be able to learn to trust each other. Finn was often too good to be true, so the way he sometimes kept Ulysses at a distance relieved that. There were good cameos of the usual Mission City characters, and the introduction at the end of one of the next main characters in the series.

very good

Loved the tension and chemistry between Finn and Ulysses. It has the main plot of their romance developing, the blurred lines of business and pleasure and all the secrets, alongside the mystery of Ulysses's investigation into the fire station, local crimes and possible corruption, and trying to use Finn to find information out.

Finn is the ultimate good guy, firefighter, volunteer at kids hospital and animal rescue, and all around sweetheart.
Ulysses is more guarded, his main focus is to uncover a story, but he's hopelessly drawn to Finn and conflicted about using him.

Loved the small town atmosphere, the grumpy sunshine dynamics, and the mystery layers from the investigations.
I liked how everything came together, and it exposes corruption and crimes.

The narration flowed really well, I liked the distinction between Ulysses and Finn's voices and internal conflicts. It was easy to listen too and felt engaging.

A spicy mm age gap romance, with mystery and tension.

This is the same town as previous books and some side characters are named dropped but it can easily be read as a standalone as long as you read Finns prequel story.

Finn and Ulysses met previously and hooked up. Finn said after the fact that he was a firefighter. Ulysses got a tip that there is major corruption through the fire department that he plans to expose and he assumes Finn must be in on it too, so he takes off in the middle of the night wanting to get away from him.

This was a great story. I loved both of the MCs. Finn is a sweetheart with a soft spot for the animals he helps take care of at the shelter and the sick kids he visits in the hospital. I loved that from the first page I knew he couldn't possibly be part of the crime and that Ulysses felt that too despite still being understandably cautious around him but also not being able to resist wanting to keep running into him. Ulysses was much more series who also had a soft spot for the animals. He was a big shot reporter in the city but a scandal occurred and this small town newspaper is the only place he could find work. He is determined to prove he is great again and be welcomed back to a big city news. This small town stay is temporary for him.

This was a much more angsty book than Gabbis other books. There was some steam but it is still pretty low. The intimacy comes pretty quick but the relationship itself is slow burn with the assumption that Ulysses isn't sticking around. I loved them as a couple. The plot kept my interest from start to finish. The different layers to it seemed unrealistic in my mind but the author brilliantly connected everything and I loved how everything came together at the end. That ending had me on edge. I knew before it happened what was going to happen and that is was totally a dumb decision. It was very predictable, so it frustrated me a bit but at the same time it did make for a fast paced, intense ending that was very entertaining.

MD did a phenomenal job narrating as always. I love his voice and he reads with great flow. He expressed all the emotions wonderfully and gave each of the characters including the side characters their own distinct voice that brought the story to life and it made the story easy to follow. He especially is great at the female side characters voices.

Wonderful small town crime mystery
