About this listen

Set under the brooding skies of North Norfolk. Meet Sara Hirst as she searches for her lost father and finds that great beauty sometimes conceals great violence.

Detective Sara Hirst has moved from London to Norfolk Police's Serious Crimes Unit. She wants to know the truth about her father, who has connections to the area. Her mother won't tell her the real story.

A new job. A new place. Same old problems.

Sara's first call-out is to a decomposing body discovered in a ditch on a local farm. How does the murder relate to a recent spate of thefts? Who wanted the victim dead?

Then the case grows very personal....

Contains mature themes.

Great story. Shocking accents. Did enjoy it overall though. Would listen to more in the series.

Welsh South Africans in Norfolk

Was looking forward to this story after my previous poor listening choice. Enjoyed the writing & the plot, but felt that the highlighting of social issues within the police force did not add anything to the story.

Shockingly poor accents

First by the author, really enjoyable and excellently narrated. Well worth a read / listen. I'll definitely read more in the series

This is well worth a listen.
A great story and well written.
However, I just wish they’d get the accents right.
I bet there’s not many Norfolk types who will make it through this, as the accents are all over the place, apart from Norfolk, which is a real shame.
Wherever you’re from, it’s important to get the voices correct, or even a soft version of them.
Otherwise, don’t bother and just read it straight, that would’ve been enough.
Give it a go though, the story’s worth it!

I had to give up after a few chapters as I couldn’t work out why everyone in Norfolk sounded either Australian or Irish … the story was shaping up and the narration would have been fine if the book had simply been ‘read’. I don’t know why narrators are encouraged to use accents when they can’t do them (I’m not from Norfolk btw but ‘to be sure’ I’m certain they don’t sound like this ‘Sheila’).

Put off by narration
