About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

A celebration of Tim Curry's life’s work - including the iconic Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show - and a testament to his profound impact on the entertainment industry as we know it today.

There are few stars in Hollywood today that can boast the kind of resume Emmy award-winning actor Tim Curry has built over the past five decades. From his breakout role as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show to his iconic depiction as the sadistic clown Pennywise in It to his critically acclaimed role as the original King Arthur in both the Broadway and West End versions of Spamalot, Curry redefined what it meant to be a “character actor,” potraying heroes and villains alike with complexity, nuance, and a genuine understanding of human darkness. He’s had dozens of roles across movies, TV shows, and musicals; lent his instantly recognizable voice to dozens of voice roles, audiobooks, and videogames; and he’s changed the lives of countless fans in the process.

Now, in his memoir, Curry takes readers behind-the-scenes of his rise to fame from his early beginnings as a military BRAT with difficult family dynamics, to his formative years in boarding school and university, to the moment when he hit the stage for the first time. He goes in-depth about what it was like to work on some of the most emblematic works of the 20th century, constantly switching between a camera and a live audience. He also explores the voicework that defined his later career and provided him with a chance to pivot after surviving a catastrophic stroke in 2012 that nearly took his life.

With the upcoming 50th anniversary of The Rocky Horror Picture Show and the 40th anniversary of Clue, there’s never been a better time for Tim to share his story with the world.

Well worth the antici… pation
In the introduction of Vagabond, Tim Curry muses that penning his memoir offered an opportunity to “malign my own reputation.” Delightful self-deprecation aside, the icon of stage and screen does anything but, instead he crafts a charming collection of personal stories, all narrated in his inimitable voice. In this reflective journey alight with humor and honesty, Curry recalls his childhood, creative journey, and career, while meditating on how lived experiences informed his craft. Of course, he also looks back at memorable roles, ranging from Dr. Frank-n-Furter to Sir Nigel Thornberry to King Arthur in the musical Spamalot. Along the way, he shares plenty of behind-the-scenes anecdotes fans will no doubt enjoy, whether enduring hours of daily prosthetics application on the set of Legend, working alongside Carol Burnett and the Muppets, embodying the demonic Pennywise (despite his own distaste for clowns), or celebrating the unique joys and possibilities of voice work. —Alanna M., Audible Editor

Tim Curry first came to my attention in Will Shakespeare, and it was love at first sight. After that, I became part of the "Midnight crowd", that dressed up and participated on a regular basis for The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Even Darkness in Legend, had me totally mesmerised. His name got added to the list of actors, who's movies I had to see.
Later my daughters grew up, loving him as Nigel Thornberry, Hexxus and Drake. Before they also fell in love with Frank N Furter.
So this book was a "must have" for me. I snuggled up and started listening, only pausing for sustenance. Totally forgetting life around me. Before i knew it, the book was over. I will have another listen in a week or so. Because the love I had felt as a young woman, now became a much deeper and more maternal and protective love. Hearing Tim's story, and what a story it is, made me feel a all the different emotions, from one extreme to another.
My deepest thanks to Tim, for sharing his life with us. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
Now, for some strange reason, I must go and make a full Sunday roast.

I've always loved Tim and this was an autobiography I never thought he would write but thankfully he has and it's outstanding. Even though he has health adversity's now his voice is as pure and as clear as ever and oh what a life he has had. A magnificent listen and very highly recommended.

I loved hearing about a life lived honestly by the author despite his stroke. He is a man to be esteemed and respected for his attitude to life.

Very engaging from start to end. To hear his own story in his own voice after all he has been through is really special. It's refreshing to hear about an actor with a genuine love for dialogue and character building.

Absolute passion for his craft

This guy has always been a hero of mine right from the early 80’s and discovering RHPC on tv one night, it made misfits like me feel like I mattered and did have a place and purpose, for that I’ll always be grateful.
Hearing about the life, his ups and downs, his family rawness has made me respect him further, truly a great individual and a credit to cinema and theatre, also why is he not a Sir yet? Come on king chuck 👍
