There's no going back to Earth. The only way forward is through hell.

After the explosive events surrounding MPF6's destruction on Karkin Four, Wic and his team of daredevil operators join forces with the rebel force known as the Blood Guard. While the Phantoms desire to help relocate human refugees to safer worlds, they're forced to confront a more pressing objective: cut off the head of the beast and keep the Androchidan Empire from enslaving another world.

Wic is immediately flung into the heat of battle, driven by retaliation, a need for justice, and the need to send a message to all other deviant species who'd wish to take advantage of the innocent: don't even think about it.

However, when a convert mission goes sideways, and key Blood Guard operatives turn up missing, Phantom Team must decide just how far they're willing to go to stop an alien species from wreaking havoc in the galaxy.

Tensions mount as the empire's high command closes in for the kill. Lies spread, secrets abound, and betrayal runs like blood in the streets. Will Sir Chuck provide critical intel in time to save the team? Can Wic pull one more hat trick against a world-conquering foe?

Find out in Valley of the Dead, the fifth nail-biting, white-knuckle episode of the acclaimed Ruins of the Earth series by Christopher Hopper and J.N. Chaney.

An enjoyable listen, wraps up a few key plotlines and sets up some more. Looking forward to the next one. Will be interesting to see how the story pans out and if it can be done without going overboard in an attempt to keep the pace and action flowing.

Not having the same narrator for the whole series is very jarring and R.C. Bray is a very good narrator for these kinds of books. So a tough act to follow.

A Good Continuation

Christopher is a great narrator but I wish this series was finished with RC bray. I just couldn't get into the book because I was so used to the original characters in the first four that it just wasn't the same I really want to finish this series but I don't think I can again Christopher is a great narrator and storyteller and I've listened to him on plenty of others but just not this one

hmmmmm

Switching narrator sadly just made this book hard to listen to, the story is still good but the narration just wasnt the same, the characters weren't the same and it made it really difficult to get through

Its still good just...

RC Bray was excellent in the previous books. The new voice actor is not at his level but to be fair, he grew into the role and I finished the book, having nearly bailed out after the first chapter. I even found myself getting a tear to my eye at one point. He did a good enough job to ensure that I'll listen to the next one but that's really because I'm invested in the story. Changing the voice actor was a massive mistake and I know many people will exit the franchise immediately.

Good story, disappointing performance from a new narrator.

I am sure the new narrator has his genre but its not combat space SciFi. If you have to change narrators then at least make an effort to vet them to find a reasonable fit. I found speeding it up to 1.2x speed did improve it a lot.

Changing to narrator mid series is insanity!
