Vampires, vaqueros, and star-crossed lovers face off on the Texas-Mexico border in this supernatural western from the author of The Hacienda.

As the daughter of a rancher in 1840s Mexico, Nena knows a thing or two about monsters—her home has long been threatened by tensions with Anglo settlers from the north. But something more sinister lurks near the ranch at night, something that drains men of their blood and leaves them for dead.

Something that once attacked Nena nine years ago.

Believing Nena dead, Néstor has been on the run from his grief ever since, moving from ranch to ranch working as a vaquero. But no amount of drink can dispel the night terrors of sharp teeth; no woman can erase his childhood sweetheart from his mind.

When the United States invades Mexico in 1846, the two are brought abruptly together on the road to war: Nena as a curandera, a healer striving to prove her worth to her father so that he does not marry her off to a stranger, and Néstor as a member of the auxiliary cavalry of ranchers and vaqueros. But the shock of their reunion—and Nena's rage at Néstor for seemingly abandoning her long ago—is quickly overshadowed by the appearance of a nightmare made flesh.

And unless Nena and Néstor work through their past and face the future together, neither will survive to see the dawn.

After being completely enchanted by The Hacienda, I couldn’t wait for Vampires of El Norte to hit the UK on audiobook—and it’s been so worth the wait! Isabel Cañas is solidifying herself as a go-to author for modern gothic horror, and this book is a masterclass in eerie, atmospheric writing that transports you right to 1840s Mexico. The audiobook is especially impressive, with narrators who nail the accents, language shifts, and emotional weight of the story.

Cañas combines historical horror, nuanced social commentary, and an immersive slow-burn romance that’s both tragic and passionate. Nena and Néstor’s story pulls you in, and the vampires are far from the sparkly kind—they’re the kind that haunt you with gruesome, gritty realism. The story delivers layers of tension, dread, and heartfelt emotion, plus the kind of pining that aches. It’s beautifully written, rich in atmosphere, and doesn’t skimp on exploring themes of class, race, and the impacts of colonialism.

This one’s dark, captivating, and a must-listen for gothic horror fans!

It took a wee while to get used to the language but the story was so absorbing. I prefer 3rd person narration and knowing what characters are thinking, so this was just perfect for me. The story was scary in places and well told. I will definitely read more of this author. Way better than 'Salem's Lot.

Bloody brilliant and scary.

I actually do not like giving negative reviews, so I will just say that this doesn't fit the Gothic Horror for me. This is a romance with very little 'vampire' in the story. Although they are there it is about the love of a young couple. I read the reviews so I knew it might be a slow burn but it just didn't really hit the right degree of 'horror' for a book with vampire in the title. The narration was ok because they obviously were both able to pronounce and speak Mexican, but the female narrator felt more 'read' that narrated but wasn't awful just didn't flow quite as much as the male narrator. As a historical fiction set as a period romance it was definitely a good story. So if you are looking for a scary, gothic horror I dont think this hits the mark but as a story where vampires are a side line its ok. I maybe am also not the books target audience, it might be a better fit for a much younger reader.
