About this listen

MILLION-COPY BESTSELLING AUTHOR JOANNE HARRIS SENSATIONALLY RETURNS TO THE WORLD OF CHOCOLAT!

'Sensuous and thought-provoking, subtle and brilliant' Daily Telegraph on Chocolat

Secrets.
Chocolate.
A touch of magic...

On a warm July evening, Sylviane Rochas scatters her mother's ashes in New York and lets the changing wind blow her to the French seaside town of Marseille.

For the first time in her life, Vianne holds the future in her own hands. Charming her way into a job as a waitress in a local bistrot, she knows that she is not here to stay - when her child is born in a few months, she must be gone.

As she discovers the joy of cooking, making recipes her own with the addition of bittersweet chocolate spices, she realises that it possesses its own magic in this town full of secrets.

Yet Vianne will never forget her mother's warning: that there is danger in revealing the true desires of those around her - and she must flee these cobbled streets before it's too late...

Million-copy bestselling author Joanne Harris returns to the world of Chocolat with the long-awaited story of Vianne, which begins six years before she opens her scandalous chocolaterie in the small French village of Lansquenet.

So wise, so atmospheric, so beautifully written
I sobbed at the end because I couldn't bear to leave...One of the world's finest storytellers
Haunting, obsessive and just a little nutty, like a freshly-made praline
Mouthwatering...your senses are left reeling
Sheer pleasure from start to finish
Sensuous and thought-provoking
I devoured it in one go
A place of magic and mysteries
A novel that shimmers with brilliance and truth
Is this the best book ever written? Truly excellent

Lovely concept, a little slow in places but enjoyable. I do agree with others that this would have made for a more compelling performance by a professional voice actor. The author’s voice was grating at times through no fault of hers.

I'm always nervous when an author narrates their own work but Joanne Harris is wonderful as Vianne.
This series remains as beautiful as ever. Indulgent in food, magic, and delightful characters.

There are only a handful of authors who give me confidence that I can sink into another world and find the escapism I need in a good book. Joanne Harris never fails.

A beautiful book with a challenging theme, There's something about Vianne that always makes me feel like everything is going to be ok.

I looked forward to listening to this as I loved Chocolat. Unfortunately the narration did not enhance the story which led to a disappointing experience. I considered stopping but hate to give up on a book. Not all authors can successfully narrate their own stories unfortunately.
