About this listen

What happens when the animals we love are slipping away — and what can storytelling do to help stop it? Remembering Wildlife: Voices for the Vanishing brings together the stories behind one of the most influential wildlife conservation publishing projects of the past decade.

Narrated by its founder, Margot Raggett MBE, this audiobook is a powerful, personal reflection on endangered species, the people fighting to protect them, and the role that images — and words — can play in saving lives. Drawn from the acclaimed Remembering Wildlife book series, this anthology weaves together essays and introductions from ten years of conservation storytelling, including Remembering Elephants, Rhinos, Lions, Great Apes, Tigers, and more.

Each chapter offers insight into a species under threat, the challenges they face, and the extraordinary efforts being made to ensure they are not lost forever. This is not a scientific textbook, nor a photographic catalogue. Instead, it is a spoken companion to the visual books — a chance to hear the heart, context, and purpose behind the images.

Through personal anecdotes, conservation reflections, and hard-won hope, Margot shares how a single idea grew into a global movement that has raised over a million pounds for frontline conservation projects around the world. With a special introduction recorded for this audiobook by wildlife filmmaker and presenter Gordon Buchanan MBE, Remembering Wildlife is an invitation to listen, to care, and to remember what we stand to lose — and what we can still protect.

I have been following Remembering Wildlife for years. Enjoying amazing wildlife photography, talks, books, bags and earrings.

I was so pleased to find out about this book on Audible. So far I have listened to the first three chapters on elephants, rhinos, apes and looking forward to continuing the rest over the next few days.

This book is so impressive, providing interesting detail on these animals, how they are endangered and how conservationists are helping.

Even though upsetting hearing some of the stories, the book is a refreshing focus compared to my day to day psychotherapy work.

I would definitely recommend!

A mix of emotions - Upsetting but inspirational!

As a long time fan of the Remembering Wildlife project I confess that I did wonder how an audiobook would fit alongside an amazing series of photography based books - but Voices for the Vanishing was a revelation. Presenting information from all ten books this way is on the one hand a sobering and often emotional description of the harm that has been done to so many iconic species and their environments and on the other is an uplifting and inspiring journey describing the work of those seeking to address the situation and lead conservation. And all in the words of some of the most established and noteworthy photographers, naturalists and conservationists in the world, many, but not all, of whom are household names. If you know the Remembering Wildlife photography books it’s a valuable addition, if you don’t I hope it will inspire you to find them, learn from them, enjoy them and further support conservation.

Naturally Magnificent

It’s all too easy to take wild places for granted, and to switch off the noise around endangered species. Which is why these books and this audio book are so refreshing. We can all take a moment to celebrate wild places and animals, so we can find our own passion for protecting them. These stories are inspiring and infectious, as is Margot’s love of wildlife, translated into pictures and words by the photographers.

Wild Passion.

As a long-time supporter of the Remembering Wildlife project, I approached "Voices for the Vanishing" with high expectations, and it did not disappoint.

Listening to the audiobook was a genuinely moving experience. It takes you across a wide emotional range: from moments of real joy and hope at the incredible conservation work being done, to a stark and sobering awareness of the damage humanity is capable of. That contrast is powerful, and it’s handled with honesty and balance.

Hearing these stories narrated adds a depth that goes beyond the printed page. The voices bring an added weight and connection to the words, making the message feel more immediate and personal.

Overall, this is a deeply worthwhile listen, thought-provoking, emotional, and ultimately positive. I have no hesitation in recommending it.

Beautifully narrated by the author Margot Raggett MBE telling the story of her encounter a decade ago of an elephant that had been poached for it's ivory which so incensed her it encouraged her to do something to raise awareness and funds for their conservation, so she approached many international wildlife photographers to ask if they would donate their elephant photographs for a book, which they generously agreed to. This was so successful that she was subsequently encouraged to go on and feature more endangered species resulting, to date, in 10 books telling the heartrending stories of the dangers they subjected to and featuring the most beautiful photographs of endangered animals ever produced and sold in order to raise awareness and funds for their conservation.
