About this listen

18th century—England is at war with the French. The East India Company is at risk of losing its trade routes.

Tom Batrick arrives in London. For the past ten years, he's worked his way up the ranks on ships patrolling Canadian waters. Now, at the request of the East India Company, he is to captain the merchant ship Warley.

But Warley is a disguised warship. It will act as a decoy to lure pirates, as well as French ships, away from British trade.

As Tom sails to India and China, he discovers Warley's mission is not just to fight off enemy attacks. The ship is crucial to the East India Company's undercover trade in opium. Outlawed by China, the Company is smuggling opium to bolster its profits, regardless of its addictive and deadly effects.

Warley is considered a perfect transport for the precious cargo. But at what cost to Tom and his crew?

The description sounded good and it was actually a nice story up till about halfway through when the author introduced a ridiculous "Lara Croft'' type girl dressed in leather who proceeded to run round beating all the men up and taking charge of the Bombay Marine contingent. From there on in it got utterly ridiculous and actually a bit annoying. I don't usually leave bad reviews but this was a waste of money and time.
Incidentally, the narrator did an excellent job as he always does, but he had nothing to work with.

I especially liked all the East India Company aspect. China, India, etc. Captain Batrick is tough and honourable. Fighting scenes are numerous and exciting. I was expecting Decoy ships 2 to follow book 1 but it didn't it is another aspect of how ships of old fooled pirates by being more formidable than expected.

great stuff
