...we do get more information about Rutledge’s past and his emotions. He meets a woman who knows something of his trauma but sadly, she’s a bit dull. The story itself isn’t the best but it’s a worthwhile read if you’re following the series.

always a good read and as usual we get to learn a little bit more about our main character. I do recommend reading this series in order though as I got hold of later ones first and that has spoiled it a bit for me. this one touches on the Titanic disaster and there are a few references to previous book but my one slight gripe is the sudden endings in all books. its such an anti climax. I wouldn't mind if the loose ends were tied up in the next volume but they aren't and I hate that. one more chapter would do it and I must admit it does spoil the whole story for me at the time. I won't stop reading the inspector ruttledge series but I know they could be even better if endings were more complete. its almost as if charles todd has run out of steam.

As with all murders one has to go back to understand the present. Charles Todd writes a good tale with a strong feel for the period and for the people who are emerging from the horrors of the Great War. It is a world on the cusp of huge changes and the listener has the feel of the twilight of the C19th and Victorian Britain and the winds of change of the new century.

The plot, the characters and the north Norfolk marshes are vividly brought into being in this story that is well-told by Samuel Gilles.
