"We" is a dystopian novel which is set in a dystopian future police state. D-503 lives in the One State, an urban nation constructed almost entirely of glass, which allows the secret police/spies to inform on and supervise the public more easily. People march in step with each other and wear identical clothing. There is no way of referring to people save by their given numbers. Males have odd numbers prefixed by consonants; females have even numbers prefixed by vowels
This is the first time I read this book. In fact, I hadn't heard of it before. It inspired the books 1984 and Brave New World (those I have read) along with others. It was written in 1921 and Zilboorg translated it in 1924. I did have a hard time following along with the book at first. And I wonder if it may be because of the translation, so I definitely will try another translation of this book. I also bought the kindle book so I can read this next time I listen to it. And I will be sure to listen to this book again. It feels like it's the kind of book that you see things you may have missed the first time you read it. What an incredible mind to have created such a world as Zamyatin has.
The narrator, at times, seemed a bit monotone - but that is exactly perfect for this book. 'We' was written as a diary with short chapters noted as Records. Record 1, 2, 3 etc. The only thing the narrator loses 1/2 star for is he could've differentiated the voices when speaking. But I thought the narrator was great and I will definitely take a look at what else he narrates.
Yes, I do recommend listening to this audiobook. I received this audiobook by the publisher, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
