About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
Colm Healy used to be one of the Met's best detectives. Until, haunted by the unsolved murders of a mother and her twin daughters, his failure to find an elusive killer left his life in ruins.
Missing persons investigator David Raker is the only friend Healy has left. As they reopen the investigation together, Raker learns the hard way how this case breeds obsession - and how an unsolvable puzzle can break even the best detective.
Their search takes them down a trail of darkness, unravelling a thread of tragedy, and forces them to sacrifice everything they have left.

While the novel begins with the magnetic pull typical of Weaver’s work, its execution eventually grapples with the weight of its own complexity.
Weaver excels at creating a gritty, dark atmosphere. The early chapters hook the reader with an irresistible pace and a deeply personal stake for the recurring characters.
This is arguably Colm Healy’s book more than Raker’s. The exploration of his psychological collapse and obsession adds a layer of tragic depth that elevates the stakes beyond a standard missing persons case.
The plot is labyrinthine, utilising multiple timelines and parallel narrators, some of which are presented in italics to distinguish them. While this layering adds mystery, it also leads to a crowded cast of characters, making the narrative feel congested as the story progresses.
What begins as a sharp, propulsive thriller eventually faces a patchy pace. For me, the sheer number of moving parts and shifting perspectives turns the final stretch into an uphill climb, where the effort to keep track of every thread begins to rival the enjoyment of the resolution.
