About this listen
She gives me what I didn't know I needed. I don't know if I can do the same for her....
For years, I've lived as a broken shell of a man, the Prom Night survivor who doesn't deserve to live. I continue my stolen life for my family's sake, but my silent world is a dark one full of terrors, with no respite to be found anywhere.
Then Liaden comes along. She's my polar opposite. An extroverted, highly successful professor, always smiling, always a sparkling ray of quirky pink sunshine. This woman makes me feel things I never even felt with the girl I lost. The girl who died in my arms many years ago when the world exploded around us. The girl I failed to save.
Liaden, though...she draws me to her like a magnet, pulling me into the light in ways I don't deserve. But I'm broken, weak, sinful. I can't even speak the words to tell her how much she means to me. This can't work out. Can it?

After listening to, and loving, the audiobook of Lizzie Stanley’s impressive first novel, “What We Deserve”, and meeting Dean, a side character, I was looking forward to his story. I knew Dean’s story was going to be a tough one, with all he had been through, but I was not expecting it to hit me as hard as it did. Wow, such a moving story, with emotions that are powerful, pouring off the pages and straight to the heart. I am loving the characters in this series, and the camaraderie between them, which is solid and special, a found family like no other. In this book, we learn Dean’s backstory and all he has been through, which is heartbreaking and the reason he is a broken man. He lost voice, but not his ability to talk, but he is selective with whom he talks because he is not that social. Then he meets her, Liaden, the sun to his darkness and one who talks enough for both of them. I adored Liaden, her sass and bubbly personality, and the way she was with Dean, treating him as an equal, her eagerness to learn his language. She brought out Dean’s charming side, a southern gentleman, but still a man battling his own inner demons, and being noble, he thinks he is not deserving of love or of her. It was great watching these two interact, then get to know each other and see their relationship morph into something so much more. Stanley penned another multi-layered story with depth, and I loved how it all played out, with the perfect balance of drama, angst, some gut-wrenching moments, profound emotions, and a slow-burn but so worth the wait romance. Like the first book, the writing, plot, and world-building are incredible, as are the complexity of the characters, their growth and development. Lizzie Stanley, thank you for another impressive and emotionally impactful story, bringing on tears, both sad and happy ones, and what it all led to: love, a heart full of love.
🎧📚🎧 June DeBorahae and Ryan Stone did an exceptional job voicing these characters, humanizing them with their personalities and emotions for a perfect portrayal of each. I loved how they took their roles and made them their own, sounding believable and just as I imagined the characters would sound. DeBorahae nailed it as Liaden, grasping every aspect of her personality, from her wit to her sassy quirkiness to her fierceness. Stone was just as amazing in Dean’s role, showcasing his personality and demeanor, bringing out his raw emotions when his character battled with his inner demons, guilt, and issues with self-worth. Both were fantastic performing the roles of the side/secondary characters and did a great job with the accents too. These two are a fantastic team, with voices that complement each other and a captivating performance that has you hooked to the story. They are entertaining storytellers and a pleasure to listen to.
