About this listen

'One of my favourite neuroscientists' ANGELA DUCKWORTH, author of Grit

'Intellectually penetrating and beautifully written' ROBERT CIALDINI, author of Influence

A neuroscientist reveals the hidden calculations that shape our daily decisions - and how to make more fulfilling, impactful choices in your work, relationships and life.

Why is it so hard to stick with the choices we make? Why is it so hard to change - and even harder to help others change? The answer lies in the feedback loop between what we value, who we are and what we do: this book is the key to unlocking it.

In this groundbreaking book, award-winning neuroscientist Emily Falk reveals the systems in our brains that control our daily decision-making - and gives us the tools to take meaningful action. Blending cutting-edge science with stories and practical insight, she reveals how our values shape our sense of self, how status, community and culture can rewire our minds, and how we can employ these realities to build new opportunities. Armed with this knowledge, you'll learn how to:

  • select information, focus attention and set up your environment to support your goals;
  • become less defensive, take on feedback and broaden your curiosity;
  • bring your brain in sync with others to learn, persuade and grow.

This is an essential guide to working with your brain to build a life shaped by intention.

was so.e very good facts and ideas but far touch chit chat about irrelevant subjects to fill the gaps. I think this is more of an entertaining book than a resource.

Certainly interesting and contains some potentially useful advice, backed by actual science, unlike most self-help books! Some of it was extremely obvious, particularly from chapter 7 onwards, but I suppose it's still important to have actual evidence of obvious things! I'd recommend this to people who enjoy self-help but are ready for something a bit deeper and more factual and balanced. I was disappointed to hear in the acknowledgements that the physical book is illustrated, which we obviously miss out on with the audiobook! I may seek it out to check out the illustrations.

Interesting but multiple examples fail to strengthen arguments. Could have been more severely edited for better impact

One of the most eye-opening, mind-blowing books I have read in a long time. I find it very well researched and warmly presented. It's a great reminder that, despite what humans like to believe about ourselves, we mostly function on subconscious, automatic ways and that awareness and change, positive, constructive change, take effort, willingness and time.

Extraordinary!
