About this listen

Book one in the M/M romance series The Arthur Quartet by Harper Fox.

Once upon a time, there was a winter that wouldn't end. And all that stands between the people of White Meadows and starvation is a young man called Lance.

Lance is 16 years old, and for all his courage and hunting skills, he's running out of fight. His family has been wiped out in a border raid, and he's drowning in loneliness. When strangers arrive at White Meadows, all Lance can think of is using his last strength to drive them away. But these men have come in peace, not to burn and destroy. Among them is a hot-headed, utterly charming prince-in-training named Arthur.

For Lance, Arthur's arrival is like the return of the sun. The prince has everything - learning, battle skills, a splendid destiny. But as the days unfold in the remote northern settlement in the shadow of Hadrian's Wall, it soon becomes clear that Arthur needs Lance, too.

A beautiful twist on the tale of King Arthur. Stunningly entwining the tale of Lance and Authur.
A love letter to the beauty of unspoilt landscapes that make you want to find and walk them. Some wonderful 'magical' insights into Britain's ancient past and constant heritage of many incoming populations. And a love story so beautifully narrated by Gary Furlong.
My favourite Harper Fox story so far.

Beautiful twist on an ancient Folktale

I really enjoyed the beautiful setting and fantasy elements. The author surely knows how to describe the world beautifully. However, she was in such a hurry to get to the romance that her writing gave me a whiplash. The characters seemed to be barely discovering an interest in each other, when suddenly, the ‘passion’ hit them like a train. A very awkward train. The characters’ background is explained through dialogue and exposition, when it could have been portioned out and introduced through action. I’d gladly have listened for many more hours of the story, but I’ve lost interest.

Could have been more

Loved this story - the narrator is also excellent - can’t wait to read the next in the series

Fabulous

A wonderful reimagining of the Legend! Having starved for Arthurian content since "Merlin" this is a fantastical but also strangely more historically accurate story? Maybe it is the dark ages setting but it gives the feeling of a dying Roman world being reborn into something new. Arthur and Lance are chaotic gremlins while pretending to be adults, and a lot of their interactions are rushed and immature, which checks out for teenagers barely growing to full height. A little short, but looking forward to the next book.

Mythical and Eerie

Bloody hell , can’t listen to anything that anymore that suits a nearly sixty year old straight romantic
