About this listen

A year has passed, and in this third novel of the Pop Larkin series, Pop Larkin is preparing to build the bungalow he promised Charley and Mariette upon their engagement. He buys a country home slated for demolition, intending to convert it for the two, but it is not long before a London couple persuade him to sell it. Pop, ever the trickster, sells it for an extortionate price, as the two social climbers know little about country life. Party throwing and cocktail mixing abound until a rocky boat and a misplaced pair of hands have Pop before the local magistrate....

Loved it! Made it very special having 'Charlie ' ...the wonderful Phillip Franks reading it! Great vocal characterisation for all of H.E Bates' adorable creations! Thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend!😊

I’ve always loved these stories but in a post-“me too” world, Pop’s behaviour feels almost inexcusable. I have felt increasingly uncomfortable with casual misogyny of these novels as I have revisited them over lockdown. The author and Pop Larkin may think it is harmless to kiss women and pinch their thighs and behinds but it does strike a discordant note now. And the way that one character’s response to his taking liberties is dealt with definitely smacks of the victim blaming culture. If however I detach myself from my current time and culture the novel is funny and loveable. But be warned, it is not a novel of the 21st century and sits firmly in its time period, in its attitudes.

I love a bit of nostalgia and this fitted the bill oh so comfortably. I have previously watched the television series, so have the people's faces brought vividly to mind and it was `perfick` to have it read by Philip Frank's (Charlie). Can`t recommend it highly enough.
