Summary

Holmeses. Moriartys. Adlers. What’s a Watson to do?

When Jack Moreno receives an anonymous invitation to the Zodiac anniversary gala, he’s inclined to ignore it. His best friend (and more), Holloway Holmes, vanished from his life five months ago, and Jack has no desire to bump into Holloway’s terrifying father, Blackfriar. But included with the invitation is an offer Jack can’t refuse: the promise that he’ll learn what really happened to his mother.

At the gala, an anonymous text sends Jack on a collision course with an amateur thief and, more importantly, with Holmes. Together, they must race to recover what the thief has stolen—information not only about Jack’s mom, but about the Holmes family. Information that could bring down Blackfriar’s empire.

By the time they reach the thief, though, she’s dead, and the stolen information is missing. To recover it, Jack and Holmes will have to learn who killed her. But other people, powerful people, are searching for the information too, and someone has already tried to kill Jack once. He’ll need luck and quick thinking to stay alive. And, of course, he needs Holloway Holmes.

Sad to see these characters leave but I enjoyed meeting them Holloway in all his quirky glory and Jack with his neverending introspection. Teenagers eh? A good, suspenseful storyline tied up the loose ends.,

Great end to a fab series

I was given this audiobook as an advanced listener.

Well, what can I say but if this is the end of the series what a great ending. Although not without angst, fear, anger and violence this book shows us an important phase in Jack Moreno's and Holloway Holmes' development into young adults. In fighting their way through all that is thrown at them they get to define themselves.

The supporting characters are well-drawn. The less said about Holoway's father the better but Jack's father is epic. Just what you want of a parent, stern when necessary because they love you and want to protect you. So, he creates boundaries for you but also he is fun and at times truly embarrassing.

I have enjoyed this series but if someone had given me the synopsis of a modern world where the Holmes, Watsons and Moriiatys offspring live today in a symbiotic and antagonistic world I would have said it wouldn't work. However, as always with Gregory Ashe, the world-building and dialogue are excellent so that you feel that you are there on this adventure with Holmes and Moreno. Coupled with this high-level writing we have Greg Boudreaux's narration which perfectly captures the story which happens in a compressed period.

If this is where I leave Moreno and Holloway. I would be happy.

After the end of the 2nd book this book was so needed. There's still a lot of hurt to work through (and this is Ashe, you get even more added on), but it's just so satisfying when it all comes together and Jack and H get their sweet HEA. I Love Greg Tremblay's narration so much. H is not an easy character to voice, but he just nails it so dang well! And his Blackfriar was seriously menacing. I truly hope we get more of Jack and H!

A thrilling conclusion!

The story starts with Jack going into the lair of the enemy. And I’m like…really??? Except they’re luring him with a promise of telling him what actually happened to his mother the night of her death. Jack has always believed he knew what happened, but that memory has been shaken. He’s no longer certain, and he wants answers. He’s also missing Holloway. Holmeses and Watsons are meant to be together. So, of course, they meet up again. And get into trouble again. And get involved with law enforcement again. And nearly get killed again.

All in a day’s work for these two teenagers.

Chaos, of course, ensues as they try to solve the mystery of the missing safe. And, naturally, Jack is stressing his poor father out while Holloway is going toe-to-toe with Blackfriar. The revelations about that relationship, I didn’t see coming. I forget, sometimes, how violent Gregory Ashe books can be. I believe because these two are teenagers that they’re somehow immune from violence.

I should know better by now.

The book has a very satisfying ending and if that were it, I’d be satisfied. Well, it’s the end of the big books. But Gregory has put together a series of short stories that I’ll be interested to snag. And series rarely end. Could Holloway and Jack team up with Jem and Tean? Entirely possible…

I’ll finish with Greg Tremblay’s wonderful narration. He just does the range from teenager through to supervillain so well. Also the female characters are good – especially Holloway’s sister. Really enjoyed both the book and the series.

Just when I think I know where it’s going to lead…

First, before listening to this book, you should have read/listened to the books before in this series. This is not a standalone.

This book was a rollercoaster! As the last book in this series, it is the culmination of the action, where all the ends are tied up and we reach the long-awaited HEA. But before that, we still get angst, pain, danger, and emotional moments.

Also, the narration was superb!! The narrator did a wonderful job.

I hope there are more books with Jack and Holloway.
