Summary

"Thoughtfully traces [Mara Wilson's] journey from child actress to Hollywood dropout...Who is she now? She's a writer." NPR's "Guide To 2016’s Great Reads"

“Growing up, I wanted to be Mara Wilson. Where Am I Now? is a delight.” —Ilana Glazer, cocreator and star of Broad City

Named a best book of the month by GoodReads and Entertainment Weekly

A former child actor best known for her starring roles in Matilda and Mrs. Doubtfire, Mara Wilson has always felt a little young and out of place: as the only kid on a film set full of adults, the first daughter in a house full of boys, a Valley girl in New York and a neurotic in California, and a grown-up the world still remembers as a little girl. Tackling everything from what she learned about sex on the set of Melrose Place, to discovering in adolescence that she was no longer “cute” enough for Hollywood, these essays chart her journey from accidental fame to relative (but happy) obscurity. They also illuminate universal struggles, like navigating love and loss, and figuring out who you are and where you belong. Candid, insightful, moving, and hilarious, Where Am I Now? introduces Mara Wilson as a brilliant new chronicler of the experience that is growing up female.

Listened to this in less than a week, great book and well read. I would recommend.

To the author Mara Wilson,
Being 28, I was a child when you were a child actor I loved all the films you were in. Maltida was one of my favourite films and we watch it over and over, it inspired me to read the book, my first proper book I choose to read. It was really interesting to hear your thoughts as the actor and how you grew up, it took me back to being a kid and I could relate. I never had thought about the actor behind the characters I loved, and I am sorry. Maltida inspired me as a kid her character and the way you played her made me strong and happy and hope you see your experience as similar. It was so great to her your story and now your inspiring me to write my story!

Really enjoyed this book

Mara is best known for her child acting but as she demonstrates here she is likely to be remembered for her wicked writing. Her book is simultaneously hilarious and heart wrenching- covering everything from learning about sex on the set of Mrs Doubtfire, the politics of high school show choir, her mother's death while filming her most iconic role in Matilda and how child actors are objectified by the media. A book that everyone should experience.

One of the best autobiographies of today

Was expecting more about here experiences working on her now most famous films and my childhood favourites but was a little disappointed when chapter after chapter she went on about random stuff. But its worth a listen and there are some behind the scene stuff about her experiences in film.

Overall OK

Mara Wilson is a great story teller from anecdotes from filming to growing up in New York and finding her adult role
